Visa Signature trip cancellation for BoA Customized Cash

So my mother and father in law paid for a cruise with their BoA Customized Cash Visa Signature card. Now, a legitimate documented medical issue for an immediate family member precludes them from going on the cruise. Visa.com lists trip cancelation that includes cruises. BoA has been giving them the run around and they have not been able to get through to Visa. Does anyone have any particular phone numbers to call or recommendations how to get a refund? They spent $2300 on this cruise and the cruise line has said they cannot cancel or reschedule the trip at all. Does anyone have any experience using this perk? Thank you!

Not all Visa Sig cards support all Visa Sig benefits (similar to the case with Mastercard World Elite), issuers need to opt in. Hopefully this card does have that benefit, the card owners should have details in their guide to benefits package, and probably online. Guessing @Aim_High might know

Yes, those Visa benefits at that link are generic, so might not apply to a specific card. Unfortunately, Bank of America doesn't make finding benefits guides online easy and I don't even see them in my BofA portal. I've never used this benefit so not sure of how it works, but I can say that contacting them first is appropriate. If your mom and father-in-law don't have a copy of their benefits guide, they could start by requesting that from customer service to see the protocols for filing a claim. It does sound like it should be covered.

I love that language! We may also offer unbeatable 20% cashback in all categories. It just so happens we don't!

Reporting back:

Turns out it was $2800. The cruise line Holland America refunded $800. Bank of America credited over $2000 and made them whole. All's well that ends well.

btw, I have the Customized Cash Rewards Visa Signature. I just called customer service and they said my card doesn't have cancellation benefits. They gave me a number to call just in case.. 800-592-4089. I'll see if that gets me anywhere... I also requested a copy of T&C for the card. Can't beleive you can't see online.

Yeah he also has CCR. He went into the branch. He's been a loyal customer for 25 years. To clarify, he was eligible for a partial refund through the cruise liner and they covered the difference. I don't have any more details than that. One funny thing: when his savings account was earning almost nothing during COVID, he asked them if he could return the pennies BOA gave him because it was an insult. They refused 🤣. I guess they came through when it mattered though.

This focuses attention on an issue I think about from time to time. For most of my purchases, I use the card that will maximize my rewards. But for some purchases, I instead choose a card that gives good purchase protection. (I'm using that as a catch-all term for extended warranties, loss replacement, price protection, trip cancellation, etc.) Obviously, I care more about such protections on larger purchases, but it's very tempting to try to get big chunks of rewards on those. Makes for a tough decision sometimes.

I'm curious to hear how others navigate this issue.

Simple fix is just to make sure nothing goes wrong, then you can focus on the rewards!

For travelling and trip cancellation benefits, it might be good to use the travel cards. CCR is mainly for e.g. online shopping or home improvement purpose and it is less likely to cover such perks. I guess, BOA-PR and TR should cover better such benefits and they should get used to pay for travel expenses.
