NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE

Hi everyone -

So after I filed my bankruptcy one of the first cards I obtained was a Credit One card. I have never missed a payment - not even by a day on any of my credit cards that I currently have. About 9 months after obtaining the Credit One card I started having trouble with either the bank payment system or Credit One's payment system -more so the bank I think - and had 3 returned payments. Credit One has always been the first payment due every month, at times I paid them the week before or a couple days before the payment due date. Nonetheless they were the first ones I was paying monthly and at times twice a month. Credit One even gave me a credit limit increase.

Fast forward to July of 2022 I get an email notifying me that my Credit One account has been closed by the creditor. Now I know that doesn't really hurt your credit all that bad and mainly affects it in the form of utilization - luckily for me my utilization was low. I called and explained to Credit One that My fiance and I have a joint checking account and explained that over the past four to five months I've been having more and more trouble with payments going through despite the facts that the money was absolutely in my account. They told me to write a letter explaining everything and submit any evidence that I had, which took me forever because I painstakingly went through month after month of transactions on my bank statement and compared them to Credit One statements. Now the reason I said that I thought it was the bank was because two of the late payments took 3 to 4 days to get returned with the last one being returned on the same day for insufficient funds - despite the fact that it was my payday when I paid that payment. Credit won't even thought it was weird that the payment came back immediately. However, my bank didn't even show an attempted payment with one payment taking almost 6 days to clear with plenty of money in the account.

I do know that under the CARD Act of 2009 it states that if a creditor receives your payment before 5:00 p.m. then your account has to be credited and if it's on a non-business day it has to be credited by 5:00 p.m. the next business day. This is also noted under 12 CFR part 1026 Regulation Z. Now, 12 CFR 1005.10 covers pre-authorized Electronic Funds Transfers on the bank's end.

It honestly was becoming too much of a hassle to try to fight it as I had too many things going on. I switched banks and open to checking account at my local credit union and continued to make payments on my credit one balance every month - with not even the slightest hint of an issue payment wise, magically.

Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago As I jumped onto the Credit One app to make my monthly payment and this message popped up asking me if I would like to reopen my card. Of course I hit yes and my card was back in good standing. I couldn't believe it. I haven't heard of Credit One doing this before with people. When my account was closed I researched on here and other places - others stories regarding their account being closed and the ones I did see were told that there's no chance of them reopening their account. So I don't know if this is something new credit ones doing maybe after 6 months or 8 months of no return payments or something, I don't know. Either way I just wanted to share my story with everyone just in case somebody's going through this or if you see somebody who's going through it on here you can refer them to this post. I was definitely pleasantly surprised.

All the best

it's great they were able to reopen your card, congrats!

you confirmed they're reopening your prior account as opposed to opening a new account for you? That would be the only thing I would be concerned about

I wonder if your payment history after the returned payments taught the system 'hey this wasn't malicious and this person has money, let them back in'

His Credit One card (don't know which type but it's not important) was compromised. Of course, that can happen anywhere. The crooks made a purchase at Amazon to test the card. He caught it and contacted Credit One to file a fraud claim. The rep processed the dispute. He checked in a few days. They told him it would take 60-90 days to finalize the investigation.

They wouldn't give him a straight answer about what he should do about the fraudulent balance. Since he was on a rebuild, and didn't want to risk a late (which would probably take an Act of God to remove), he paid the balance in dispute.

He checked in periodically and they never processed the claim. He refiled. Nothing happened. He never got his money returned to him, and never got an email or letter about the dispute. He closed the card. He never got his money back.

That was enough for me. Then I joined this forum and read a number of other stories.

I don't need personal experience to have an opinion, and I don't need permission to express it. I don't have to stick my hand in the fire to know it's going to burn me.

Even though the OP changed banks, it still could have been Credit One, and even if it's not, they still stink.

I don't understand the hate. They serve a purpose they cater to a market of people who have no credit or a track record proving they shouldn't have credit. The people that have a problem with credit one likely would have had a problem with whomever they got a card from. People bad at tracking due dates, people who don't read terms, people who can't be bothered to look close enough at the logo and don't realize they didn't apply at capital one... who despite common perception had the logo AFTER credit one.

People put far too much stock in opinions of a company based on reviews on the internet from people who likely don't know what they are talking about, and repeat those opnions they have no personal knowledge of Credit One may not be a great company they also are not that bad, but their customers are also largely not that great and that is merely my needs no permission opinion.

If the issue was from the Cap1 interface to pull money from an external back account, it may hit you again. Sync closed my card because of a similar issue from their side and after reading several reviews of the other issues with Sync, I should thank them to avoid doing business with me again.

One way to bypass this issue can be using the bill pay method of one external bank to pay for the Cap1 credit card. This way may have 1-2 days of delay and it should get planned in advance but it looks like it is a much trustworthy option.

Yeah I wasn't overly excited when they approved me right after my BK but I tell you it really wasn't jumping off point for my credit because a few months of solid payment history with them started leading to more offers pre-approval wise. If I'm on mistaken I think they were a pre-approval as well initially and I didn't immediately accept lol. I had this internal thought process of like "ok.. last chance to pre-approve me before I accept this crappy card! Anyone? No? Well, Credit One it is" 😂😂😂

Now I'm wondering if they charged me a account reopening fee. And you absolutely hit the nail right on the head with all the fees they charge - good God. One thing that does really make me mad with them is their payment system. That's why they are always one of the first ones to be paid every month and as early as possible bc they frequently have issues with their payment site. It drives me nuts. That is one thing I consistently read when reviewing them and would say that is probably the biggest complaints I saw was the fees and their payment system.

I never thought about using bill pay and thinking about it makes sense what you're saying.

Yeah I definitely not heard a lot of good things about synchrony either. I have one card for them and that's my Care Credit card - the only card I've ever been pre-qualified for with them. I had to take my dog to the emergency vet in May 2022 and didn't have the extra cash to pay them to see my dog so I had to quickly fill out a Care Credit pre-qualification on their site and I was approved. My pup ended up being okay in the end - $850 later. Other than the Care Credit card I am a ghost to them LOL.

If you don't mind can I ask something? If you don't want to answer I completely understand and no hard feelings, but you said you had a synchrony card and I am wondering if you have any Capital One cards besides your Walmart/Cap1, like strictly just a Capital One card or if you have trouble getting them. It looks like you have a great FICO score so I couldn't imagine you would but when it comes to Synchrony and Capital One it seems like a very left-sided and right-sided crowd. Like on one side you have people who get approved by Capital One but not synchrony and on the other side you have people who get approved by synchrony but not Capital One. Have you found that to be the case? Capital One loves me - in the past year and a half I think I've opened three cards with them but again when I try to do a pre-qualification for synchrony Bank they have the bouncer at the door ready to kick me out lol.

Not sure if I should give you applause or my condolences on your reopening of the Credit One account.

The hassle you just went through is just one of so many reasons to avoid it. On the other hand beggars can't be choosy.

If possible get a secured card through a non viper bank if possible.

Just a reminder to stay on topic. The bashing really isnt going to prove anything to the OP. Nor contributes to the threads title. Especially if your not a card holder. Many creditors have their flaws. Many had to get things going with sub-prime lenders like Credit1 and others. No other choice. Least it turned out well for @Legally_Speaking2512 . Thats all that matters.
