Yep, that's the thing with these quarters - I think they are going for holiday shoppers, which in a way makes sense, but those who frequently use Amazon or Target like @ptatohed and myself already get 5%, and those who don't like @gdale6 often don't have enough of a reason / incentive to bother. And for those with Amazon cards, they sometimes will offer 6% if you're willing to wait a little longer for shipping (which I always choose), something I have seen on my Chase Prime card and P2 has seen on her Synchrony store card, but I have not seen on Affinity Cash Rewards and guessing would not see on Discover It. Definitely a wasted quarter for me too.

Dang, I was hoping for 5% on digital wallet spend again this year.😏
I don't shop at Target ever, and I get 5.25% back on online shopping already.

Well, good thing this quarter was groceries and I had an extra 4% back on everything, so put enough spend through my Discover to get a CLI, because it will be sock drawered this quarter.

Yup. Discover is my sole "random rotator" card which I hang onto, and it's more for the age of account (my oldest still open at 31 years), the great customer service, great balance transfer offers, network diversity, and the high limit they've given me. The 5% rewards are sometimes worthwhile, but of course even those are capped. However, the 5% rotator version gives me the best overall rewards compared to their Chrome or Travel cards.

And this ^^^ (wasted quarterly categories) is one of the several reasons I dislike these random rotator cards in general and mostly stay away from them, with the exception of my Discover. Some other reasons being that rewards have caps which limit their advantage over a flat rate card, low average spend in a category can also limit the rewards advantage, having to remember to track the categories, and duplication of categories between multiple rotator cards. So while ideally they could be great cards for anyone who enthusiastically maximizes cash back rewards, or for those who can take full advantage of them, I found the extra hassles to not be worth chasing the limited rewards.

Like the others who have posted, I rarely shop at Target (actually boycotted them for about eight years but do occasionally go.) And online shopping earns 5.25% already with BofA CCR unless I were to have high spending, such as for the holidays. So yes, a wasted quarter for me as well.

Great! Works well for me. I purchase a lot thru Amazon but don't have their card. I also shop Target for occassional food items, personal care products and meds. DW has a target card I just use my Discover but enter her cell # for target circle. I should easily exceed $1500.

HUH? Frequent shoppers of Amazon and Target already get 5 pct cb? I only get 5 pct cb at Target using my red card and only 1 pct cb from Discover, have I been missing out on something?

Well for those of us that shop there even semi regularly we probably have an Amazon card that without a Prime accoutn gives 3% cashback or with a Prime account give 5% cashback. There is a Synchrony store card, consumer card from Chase or the business card from AMEX to choose from. I use the AMEX business version myself but whichever one you choose it's still 5% cashback with a Prime account. In my case I can pick 90 day terms (0% interest) or the 5% cashback.

I'm in Target pretty much weekly and dont get 5% back. I just never got around to getting the debit card and I dont want another credit card to manage. I should look into getting the debit especially witha $50 offer on future purchases.

I mean, it makes sense. This deal gets them so many new signups with people new to credit. For those who don't have the card, that 5% we see is really 10% (1st year cb match) and one holiday season of 10% is enough to want to keep that card for a long time. Discover just is not for people wanting great cards / have good cards.

I think the 5% Target category isn't horrible though, like the reply above, many are just not bothered to get a Target card.

All valid points. Discover is not as good as CFF for example, since that card is useful year round with additional 3% categories (which sometimes stack). Discover either has a good quarter, or it's sock drawered... or it's a quarter where you can knock out the spend very quickly (like buying Costco cards online for Wholesale), and THEN it's sock drawered.

I try to avoid cards that are locked to a specific vendor personally. Whether they be travel cards or store cards (I will be ditching my Macy's one of these days; it annoys me just to look at it.) I had planned on getting rid of my Amazon card once I got the Affinity... but Affinity got worse with no High5, and Amazon started giving 6% often (and there's some purchases on Amazon that Affinity doesn't catch.) 🤷‍♀️ It's prolly my most heavily used card these days.

So, all that is to say I don't have a Target card and am unlikely to ever get a Target card. So a 5% quarter is useful to me, as the only time I seem to shop at Target IS around Christmas, both for holiday decoration impulse buys and a few rare gifts for the niblings that Amazon may not carry. Since Walmart+ has been stepping up their game this year, that makes Target even less likely as a shopping stop for me.
