What cards have the highest minimum starting limit?

This should be obvious but I'll put this restriction just in case. Obviously charge cards and cards with no preset limits are not included in my question.

I have heard the chase sapphire preferred is a 10k minimum limit, all visa signature cards have 5k minimum limits. I think the venture x is also a 10k min limit.

are there any cards out there higher than 10k minimum for starting limits and if so what are they? And what's the highest you know of?

I would assume that no card has a minimum starting limit over 30 grand cause that's just ridiculous

The $5K minimum starting limit on Visa Signature cards is a convention, not a requirement. There are plenty of examples of the US Bank Cash+ cards being issued over the years with $500 starting limits and the $15K minimum for the United Club Card when it was issued as a Visa Signature and IIRC the UNFCU Elite. Much the same is true for the US-issued Visa Infinite; $10K is the convention but the UA Club still retains the $15K minimum as IIRC does the CNB Crystal as examples, and I know of US Bank issuing Altitude Reserve cards for less than $10K SL.

Chase Sapphire Preferred has a $5K minimum starting limit BTW, it's the Sapphire Reserve that has the $10K minimum SL.

It could be there are cards with a $30K+ minimum SL, but those would target high rollers and not for us hoi polloi to apply for.

The $5K minimum starting limit on Visa Signature cards is a convention, not a requirement. No. They only gave me $7,700 on my CSP, but that was almost six years ago.

It's seems that starting CL have fallen over the last several years with some financial institutions.Years ago Capital One issued me a Venture with a $30k starting limit since cut to 16k. Before the annual fee was implemented I was issued 2 Pathfinders by PenFed with 30k and 20k limits where they remain despite hardly any use.

Doubt that would happen today.

It's been on my "list" for the past few years, @Anonymous, and I do still plan to apply. I entered the garden last fall with plans to add a few new cards in the fall 2024 to push my TCL a little higher. They opened their banking division in 1997 to primarily serve military families and veterans as an online/mobile bank, but they do have one physical branch. While the First Command Advisory Services has $17.5 Billion in assets under management, the banking division is much smaller with just over $1 Billion in assets. They are the 90th largest bank in Texas and 983rd largest in the US, according to depositaccounts.com. So honestly, I wouldn't expect them to have a cutting edge credit card product. Yes, it's true that the First Command Visa Signature Premier is sort of a meh card in terms of rewards, but it is a card that just everyone can't acquire since it requires minimum assets of $250K. Due to my long relationship with them along with the assets, this seems to be a great card for me. The minimum credit limit is $25K, but I was hoping with my credit profile and relationship that it might go much higher. Part of me wants to apply just to see what they would approve! I opened a deposit account with them earlier this year as a precursor to applying for the card, as it's an easier process if you also have a banking relationship. If they approve a $25K to $50K credit limit (or higher ??), that adds some awesome utilization padding to my file than would be unlikely to be closed even if I rarely used it due to the relationship.

The base earnings rate is 1.5 points (worth 1.5% cash back.) Not great but still pretty mainstream compared to many lenders. It also earn 3 points (3% cash) at military commissary and base exchanges. The current APR is 18.49% which is in-line with some of my other current APRs and lower than many. It is a premium metal card with no AF, and it does include some great premium card perks which are unusual for a no AF card. Moreso than the rewards rate, the perks and high minimum SL are what make this card more attractive.

Priority Pass lounge visits (12 annually included.) (Of course, I have Priority Pass on other cards, but if I decided to close them or the benefit was nerfed, this card provides some access for free.)
Secondary Rental Car CDW (primary outside the US).
Baggage Delay Insurance beginning at four hours and paying $100 a day for up to three days.
Cellphone Insurance paying $500 per claim and up to $1000 per rolling 12-month window.
Extended Warranty Coverage adding up to 1 year to warranties of 3 years or less.
Hotel Theft Protection paying up to $1,500 per claim.
Lost Luggage Insurance paying up to $3K per claim.
RideShare Insurance Protection ($100K AD&D and $200 personal property) while using a rideshare company.
Roadside Dispatch for help with automotive breakdowns.
Travel and Emergency Assistance Hotlines for help when traveling.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance which reimburses up to $2K per common carrier ticket per person.
Trip Delay Insurance when a trip is delayed by more than 12 hours and pays up to $300.
Travel Accident Insurance (Accidental Death & Dismemberment) but that it almost a joke it's so low. Maximum benefit is just $1,000, compared to the $1 MILLION on my Chase Sapphire Reserve. But most of those other coverages are rare to see on a no-AF card.

That's actually pretty tame compared to one example that comes to mind, @NoMoreE46.

Remember @californiaboy935? He hasn't been online since 05/18/2024.

We had a string of high approvals from him. Apparently he was sitting on multiple millions and it opened doors for him, even without a thick credit file. This just goes to show that often it's not the CARD that gives the highest limits. It's the PROFILE including assets and income.

UBS Visa Infinite - $286,500 SL approval

*Note: UBS later shut down his account. I believe they expected him to fund his investment accounts better or more quickly. He has an imgur account that still shows the screen shot with that high limit in the thread.

JP Morgan Reserve Approval - $100K SL

Navy FCU Platinum - $50,800

*This was his 2nd card with Navy but I don't believe I've ever seen a $50K+ SL with any other NFCU card.

I stand by something I've posted about often on My FICO. My theory is that the highest SLs are often on AF travel cards, in particular the higher AF travel cards. Lenders target those cards more toward high rollers and big spenders. They like to give them generous credit limits to keep them happy, and keep those AFs coming in. So some of my "high limits" strategy has revolved around those types of cards, as long as I find them useful.

Not a minimum, per se, but for several users including myself, when we joined Affinity FCU, and then waiting till we got the "pre-approved" notice for CCs and loans etc, they showed a pre-approved SL of $35k and followed through on it 🤷‍♀️

Question, does this card require you to maintain 250k in assets, or just have it for initial card approval? P2 is retired military but still works on-base (meaning we no longer get AFs waived but they get a lot of milage out of the on-base 5% purchases on the USAA card).

That's a good question, @unsungivy. The disclosure on the card doesn't specify, and I could see it going either way.

But moving money over to First Command Investments isn't like transferring funds to Bank of America or Chase electronically and then setting up some self-directed investment account, or parking it for a month and then moving it out. First Command clients always work personally with an advisor, and they have 733 worldwide according to their website. Most are located at major military bases, former military bases, or places with many military retirees. They will listen to your goals, help formulate a detailed and formal written plan, and meet with you regularly to follow up, all as part of their services. Like working with an advisor at any major investment firm, there are fees that drop as Assets Under Management rise. (The highest tier fee is 1.25% AUM but it drops with larger accounts to well under 1%, even as low as 0.5% with $2 Million+.) Consequently, the process of moving the money and the fees make it unlikely that you'd want to do it solely for getting the credit card.

There are military members who may tell you they can do all this without paying an advisor, and that's good for them if they have the discipline and knowledge to actually follow through with it over decades. My family appreciated the guidance and knowledge of our advisors and our finances today are in much better condition that they would have been if we had tried to do it alone, in my opinion. They started us on the road to financial security and I thank them for that. They don't hold all my investments, but they do still have the IRA I originally started with them. As for working with an advisor, I feel reassured knowing that if I pass away before DW or if I become incapacitated, she will have someone to help her/us manage our finances without my assistance. This is an important consideration for those who are doing it all by themselves with self-directed investing but married to a spouse who isn't knowledgabel or involved in the process.

My AMEX BCP starting limit was $34.9K, my Navy Fed starting limit was $25k and $25K, X1 was $21K, and my Chase Amazon Prime, Chase Marriott Bonvoy, and Langley FCU Travel card starting limits were $18K. Good luck.

Truthfully, that is indeed how I learned to type and now anything else just would seem improper, just like the younger generation might find anything but a single space improper. Until you pointed it out, I think it might have been only the second time I've even heard about the slow shift, and now you've made me self-conscious about it! But a quick web search shows it's been a very gradual change that has only recently been widely accepted by style manuals even including the holdout APA (American Psychological Association) in 2019 and Microsoft in 2020, only four years ago. In 2018, there was an article in The Atlantic magazine, "The Scientific Case for Two Spaces After a Period" (James Hamblin) with a subtitle: "A new study proves that half of people are correct. The other is also correct." Lol Several articles point out that although the style guides have generally sided with the single space as the more current and accepted choice, there is leeway for double spacing if it is a student's instructor's preference or .... if it is a personal choice in non-formal writing. I choose the latter! Anyway, I'm too old to retrain my hands for typing like that.
