How many of you still carry the physical store card, like Target or Kohls, if you have the app on your phone?

If so, why?

All my Target spend shifted to Amazon about a year ago but even before that I don't think I ever carried the card outside even once. 🤔 It might be in a box somewhere in one of the closests...maybe.

I have no cards that fall in this catagory, but if I did I would carry it like the rest of my cards. Phones can have problems and apps can crash and burn, but "card in hand" = "card in hand"

^^^^ This, plus some still prefer a small flip phone.

The old style with out system upgrades, or apps.

My only store card is the Lowe's card.

it lives in a coffee cup on my mothers dresser

she uses it two or three times a year to buy garden supplies with the 5% off.

I rarely walk thru the door of a Kohl's store but the physical card remained in my wallet until recently morphed itself into a Kohl's Visa. A physical Amazon store card is hiding somewhere in my wallet for an unknown reason..

For those times you go to Whole Foods since you can now use the "Amazon store card" there for 5% as well as the Visa.

Giving you justification for the wallet space.

I don't currently have any store cards for stores with physical locations but if I did I'd have to carry the card because my phone stays at home, where it belongs.

Er. That sort of defeats the purpose of cell phones... even the original, pre-smartphone purpose of emergencies. Good luck finding a pay-phone on a corner instead 😜

I think you can actually just check out with your Amazon Pay account at Whole Foods now, actually. You definitely can at Amazon Fresh (P2 does not have the Amazon card in their digital wallet, or physical wallet, but occasionally picks something up there when they do returns at Whole Paycheck and I see the charge on the card account).

I have a BBY store only card which is used when shopping at a store. Not even sure if there is a phone app for the card. Regardless, I prefer physical cards.

I carry my Target MC because the app constantly asks for the CVC, much to my annoyance.

I've never kept any of those with me. The only one I bother carrying the physical version of is the amex plat, since some lounges won't accept a digital version depending on who's working that day.

Between myself and spouse, we have 5 store cards...

Target:

The app should work perfectly, and usually does, but sometimes it asks for the CVC, which is ridiculous after you're already securely signed into the app and have card info stored there.

For a while I carried the card, but then decided to just store the card info in a secure place on my phone, so if it asks, I can just look it up real quick.

Kohl's:

Not my favorite card, but it has it's benefits for shopping at Kohl's, and at least it's finally co-branded.

It's also one of my oldest accounts.

It also has "Kohl's Pay" in the app, so no NEED for the physical card.

However I wonder when it might not work like the Target bs, but that hasn't happened so far.

Old Navy:

Also not my fav card, but it does offer decent rewards. Spouse shops there semi often, so it gets used enough.

It can easily be used through a digital wallet like Apple Pay / Google Wallet.

I don't carry the card.

T.J.Maxx:

Card gives decent rewards if you shop enough, and spouse does shop there a lot.

Again this one can easily be used through a digital wallet.

Amazon:

I still have the Synchrony Store card and it works perfectly for what I need.

All shopping is online through the Amazon app, so no need for a physical card.

I don't have any Whole Foods near me, but other comments seem to confirm you still wouldn't need a physical card.

So, outside of the oddity that is Target, and a couple others that were mentioned before me, most cards can be left at home.

99% of the places I shop can be paid for using a digital wallet, and that's what I usually pay with.

One place you will definitely need your physical card though, no matter which card you use, is the b&m Home Depot.

Their backward-ass store still doesn't accept tap-to-pay, so you'll need a physical card there for sure.

Personally I don't carry a traditional wallet. I use a money clip, and what fits in there is what I carry with me.

That is usually 2 $20 bills in case I need cash for something (if I know I'm going somewhere where I may need more cash, then I take more of course).

A couple of insurance cards, drivers license, and usually 3 credit cards.

Even though the digital wallet is used 99% of the time, I just like to be prepared, so it's the cards I'm currently using for grocery stores and restaurants, and then a catch-all card.

I only have two store cards. If I happen to be going to the mall where both of these stores are (or were) located, I try to remember to take the cards with me. Otherwise they stay in the sock drawer. Both of these stores can look up and use the card account without me having the physical card, but it's a bit of a pain to do it that way.

Kay Jewelers card rarely gets used. Maybe once or twice a year. Sometimes I go two years without using it. If it gets canceled for lack of use, it's not a huge loss. There are no rewards attached to it but I sometimes get pretty good discount offers just for having the card.

Eddie Bauer closed the store where I frequently shopped and they have no other stores anywhere near me. I can still use it online. I've been notified that card is going away at the end of the year, and I don't care. It gives me an extra 2% back in addition to my Eddie Bauer rewards, but they're only store credit and they do expire quickly. (Now that I thought about it, I just checked. My $15 rewards expired yesterday ) I have other 2% cards. I've been offered a new Eddie Bauer Visa or MC (I can't remember which) that I think pays 3% back. I'm not sure if that's in addition to the membership rewards or instead of those rewards. Still not real excited about it. If they want to give me one, fine, but I'm not applying and taking the inquiry for it.
