Banned from AMEX

I used to be an authorized user on my mom's AMEX. Unfortunately she defaulted the account when her business went under. Burned them about $20k. That was 10 years ago. I'm trying to apply a card through their pre-approval but won't go through because "Amex closed my account". I don't know if being an authorized user will get banned along with the primary card holder. I'm no longer in speaking terms with her so getting her to resolve this will be out of questions. Should I just give up at this point? Thanks!

Being an authorized user on someone's account should not effect your ability to get an Amex card. By chance, is the your mom's amex account on your credit report? I would call Amex.

Appreciate your quick respond. I did call their customer service with the phone number that I found on their website. It was an automated operator keep asking me for my card number. I don't have that card anymore and there's no option to connect directly to an agent. Appreciate it if anyone can provide me with information. Thanks!

@sjt , strangely enough, it doesn't show much other than just a closed account on my credit file. It's been like this for years and didn't bother about it until I try to get a card from them. Obviously this is on me for not doing my due diligence. Lesson learned. My current FICO is 720. Not sure if I should just give up and move on since I'm not the primary account holder, I have very little control over this. Thanks!

@simoncww I would call back if you keeo hitting 0 # you will eventually get someone or you can also file a cfpb complaint. As long as you were not financially responsible you should be good to apply.

@Harvey26. You're not wrong but I just have a feeling that it's going to be a long process (endless phone calls) especially when the case is more than 10 years old. I will think about what's the next step (if decided to pursuit). Thanks for the tip.

The ex wife burned amex while I was an authorized user. I was able to get an amex card without issue not long after that (a few months).

I burned them in 2008, they came back in 2021 and sent me an email, saying they would let me back in if I paid the charge off. I told them to pound sound. I still prequal with them for giggles. Of course they deny for account closed and thats also on the business side as well....Im ok I have 7 cards and 3 of them I burned have very good CL with them....too many cards out there to sweat not having an Amex

Which card(s) are you trying to apply for? Maybe start off small and not go for their highest tier cards quite yet.

Aren't charge offs supposed to stay on the credit report for just 7 years? Maybe contact the three bureaus at annualcreditreport.com and have it deleted.

Also, if those things don't help and you are dead set on getting back in with American Express, what I would do is open a checking and/or savings account with them in the meantime until they get it all figured out.

No need to chase your tail, try the phone call and note the time and date, and if you don't get an agent or if the agent tells you that you're SOL go ahead and follow the suggestion to file a CFPB complaint online against American Express and include in the complaint that you attempted to call them. AMEX will have 30 days to respond to the complaint.

@coldfusion, greatly appreciate the advice. I've been out of the credit game for a while and can't believe I get caught up with this even years later. Like other members mentioned, AMEX does have long bad memories. Thanks!

My daughter is au on my AmEx EP and yes, it does appear on her credit file and so contributes to her good credit score, which is why I gave her the card. It's frozen, and when she needs it I just get on the AX app and open it up. (Hasn't happened yet!).

Perhaps legally the charg offs are supposed to disappear after seven years, but that doesn't mean AmEx can't hold an internal grudge.

If someone owed you money and just walked away, would you lend to them again?
