Yes, congrats!...sounds like you are off the Blacklist..just need to get a better score to be considered for one of their cards. Time will help a lot with that and you will be back in the club again. It great that you got this behind you now. Even if you didn't pay them back, they could still let you back in but without the settlement you worked out, there are reports that your phone might ring with AMEX calling about that past unsettled debt. Since you settled with them...that won't happen.

to be fair...it wasnt that you paid 17k to get one of their cards. AMEX offered a nice settlement on past debit that was owed and at the same time they are willing to try and do business with you again....if you decide to give them the business...it's your call.

There are MANY other options out there for CC spend, but it is amazing the value and draw that the AMEX brand carries. They are very good at what they do and wield some clout in the CC world.

Congrats again on getting this settled with them and off to the next adventure! As others have posted....there is much life outside of AMEX, know your options and choose what offers the best for your needs.

My experience with AMEX:

3-4 years ago I made some bad business decisions and was deep in debt. I negotiated with AMEX on 3 accounts (they were great to work with) but after a couple months I couldn't make their minimum payment so just stopped. From there I made the mistake of using a debt consolidation company that I made one payment to each month and negotiated all remaining debt, except the AMEX accounts. After a couple years of payments, that company partnered with a bank to get me a loan for the remaining balances. They asked me about the AMEX accounts and I said go ahead and contact them. AMEX renegotiated the accounts again and at that time I settled all 3 accounts (previously closed). A month later AMEX emailed me with a pre-approved Blue Cash Preferred account! I assumed it was because I contacted them and not the other way around. Today I have 3 cards, checking, savings and a loan with them. They are my go to for everything financial.

Amex has a very good memory when it comes to account holders that have burned them in the past. I included them in a bankruptcy in 2005 (20 years ago). While you think that the bankruptcy would have disappeared from my credit report by now (it would have fallen off back in 2015), any potential creditor reviewing the credit report would not see that I charged off almost $3,000 on the Amex (and included them in a ch 7 bankruptcy), Amex doesn't remove that from their database. In fact, I applied for their cards quite a few times as soon as the bankruptcy dropped off my credit report. Everytime that happens, I get the generic letter from them advising me that due to an unsatisfactory relationship I had with them, I am not eligible for another account. Credit report was never pulled every time I apped. At least by them doing that, there is no ding to my credit for a hard pull. Anyone else that I burned back in 2005, I was given a 2nd chance. Chase let me back in after 7 years. Bank of America (known as MBNA at the time) let me back in after 5 years. Capital One was the day after my case was discharged (secured account, which became unsecured after a few years, as well as a generous credit line increase). Citi was 8 years. Discover, well, I burned them, but didn't want them again (although I am sure they would extend the offer to let me back in). But not American Express. Oh well. I do have a couple of 3rd party cards with the Amex backing (as in my Macy's Amex and one other through Citibank with Amex), but I am not with them directly.

It's well within Amex's rights to hold internal records as long as they want to mitigate risk. There is regulation on how long they can affect one's credit report, but that has nothing to do with forcing them to issue credit to individuals that have burned them in the past.

How did you get to the point of being sued? Were you experiencing a financial hardship? Were they unwilling to negotiate before taking legal action?
