Nusenda's gone nuts...Weird Q1 categories

For those with the Platinum Cash Rewards rotator, or fellow 5% rotator fetishists, Nusenda's update to their current categories for 2025 was just posted (of course super late as the intern in charge of web duties didn't have the time). I can only conclude that their executive office must be high or just doing this for the lol's.

Drum roll...the Q1 categories are...

-Candy, Nuts, and Confectionery Stores

-Fitness Clubs

-Jewelry Stores

-Streaming Services

What an odd assortment of useless categories. Candy, nuts, and confectionary stores also seems to be a bit in conflict with fitness clubs lol. I miss when this card used to be Gas, Restaurants, Gas, Restaurants, like clockwork.

Definitely a sockdrawer card moving forward. I've been personally dissatisfied with this CU lately, particularly with the super clunky app, slow loading times, and generally archaic interface with card functions and payments. Not worth spreading spend out to this and having to navigate the redemption process either. Couldn't even reliably use the Q4 restaurant category either, since many local spots weren't getting the 5%, unlike my Alt. GO, Amex Gold, and Citi CC's. Multiple Citi Custom Cash cards has somewhat put this one out to pasture.

They started messing around with the qualifications around Q4 2023, if not earlier. Probably had too many people maxxing out easy categories like groceries and dining so did a low-key nerf. Credit union 5% cards just do not stick like the big banks'.

You can still park $100 in savings, use the card infrequently and get a year-end dividend. Lowest payout last year was $25.

Wow.

I forgot to even check! I'm using my NFCU card for everything ($3500 spend in first 90 days for $350), I haven't even thought about the new quarter and what cats my rotators might have.

Candy and confectionery stores for Valentine's Day, jewelry stores for V-Day, too, and fitness clubs for new year fitness resolutions. 😁

Nah, they're lookin' out for ya: you'll need the Fitness Clubs to work off all the Candy, Nuts, and Confections you consume while watching all those Streaming Services. The Jewelry Stores are the real non-sequiter unless, of course, they're doing it in anticipation of Valentine's Day, (which could also cover Candy, Nuts, and Confectionary Stores,) and the Society of American Florists forgot to pay their bribe this year...

I think you nailed it. Sweets+Jewelry for V-Day. And maybe Streaming for some Netflix & Chill? (Or just to have one "normal" category... but let's be honest, switching your Streaming card quarterly (or monthly) is a huge pain, and I don't think that category gets used much on rotators when it's offered.)

Fitness clubs in Q1 is just... normal. And on so many cards. "Smart" thing to do is buy a yearly membership for max cashback... at which point they've got you.

Honestly, if you use these the way they're envisioning, you'd max them out fast and easy. Jewelry from an actual jewelry store isn't exactly cheap, so would take up most of your spend at a nice 5%.

Their definitely helping Nuts.com. It definitely looks like they are doing their best to sort something out for the people doing new years resolutions and getting people together. You will be surprised how many weddings happen so early in the year along with Valentines day. Obviously the streaming services is an every time favorite. The way I see it the categories are an attempt to be useful without actually being useful. Kind of line Chase and their Norwegian Cruise Line category.
