How exactly does applying for the Costco Amex in the store increase your chances for approval vs applying online? Has anyone had experience applying in the store and being declined?

I don't know if it improves your chances of being approved. It will give you an instant decision, whereas applying online always gives you the 7-10 day wait. As with other instore apps, it can't hurt that you are standing there infront of them with ID. So if it helps, it may be because they don't have to worry as much about fraud.

Apping in store is faster - you can get instant approval since Costco's review is done on the spot. Online, AMEX has to send your info to Costco for membership verification and/or eligibility. I am sure people get denied in store, if their FICOs are not quite what AMEX wants.

Plenty of people pay CASH at Costco because they don't have the card. I think the end result is the same (applying online or in store). In store is just faster.
