The question is that I find many are asking for gas credit cards recommendations when most Americans are members of Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's Whole, the use oil company gas credit cards, debit cards. I find many recommend Citi Custom Cash when you are locked out of Costco because it is Mastercard, I am aware able to use Chevron, Shell, Kroger plus subsidaries, Safeway, Exxon. Mobil. In my mind if I am going to shop at Costco, Sam's Club or BJ's, defintely I will fill my gas there and not drive extra miles to fill at another gas station with higher prices. I do use the AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature Credit at Costco for 5% cashback. I do use Loves' during road trip besides Sam's Club as a memberand since it does not exist in Oregon

What credit card do you use for gas?

I use the SYW MasterCard. Or rather, I have P2 use it since I have an EV. 5% default (6% really since I pay it off with debit card) and not capped monthly like the CCC is at $500, and leaves both CCC and PayPal available for better categories.

Depends on the flavor(s) of the month:

- Citi Custom Cash for 5% combined with random 2-3% CB offers @ certain stations thru the Citi app.
- Chase FF if gas or PayPal is the 5% qtrly category
- Discover It (rotating) if gas is the 5% qtrly category
- Whichever Amex has the spiciest statement credit (e.g., I had an Exxon 10% CB for a few months in 2024)

Local grocer has cheap gas but it's not Top Tier nor does it code as a gas for CC purposes. In general, I only fill up w/ Top-Tier fuel brands.

The gas stations in my area - except Costco - levy a 2-3% credit card surchage. I have Costco membership, but the nearest location is not that convenient - basically have to make a separate trip just to pump gas.

However, Shell and ARCO stations are on my commute and consistently offer reasonable prices (especially ARCO.)

Both brands also sell gift cards at grocery/office/home improvement stores, and paying with gift cards avoids the credit card surcharge.

So my default gas card is actually any credit card offering 5% on grocery purchases (or just use Ink Cash at Staples.)

I do keep the Abound Visa in my mobile wallet for 5% on gas purchases, in case gift cards run out. Prefer it to the Costco Visa because Abound automatically credits the 5% at the end of each billing cycle.
