As long as you stay on the same network you can keep the card number. Bank of America has MasterCard and Visa versions of most of their core cards and you can switch between them by your choice or the banks. Also some cards come in AmEx versions. My first CC with BoA was a MasterCard and then they changed it to a Visa. The BoA system is almost as flexible as Chase's and in the case of networks it is even more so.

I'm planning to upgrade my Bank of America personal credit card. I'm approved to do it and all that.

I want to keep my same credit card number after the upgrade.

Do you have any tricks to improve my chances of keepin my same card number?

I think it's impossible to guarantee that I will keep the same card number. Customer service said that there is about a 50/50 chance and there is no way to control or predict whether the card number will change.

I know that there are other types of workarounds to handle the card number change, some merchants will auto-update, etc. But I just really really really really really don't want to deal with that. I have my reasons.

I agree with @UncleB above- but I sucessfully PC'd a BoA TR to a UCR in February - and kept the same card number. The CVC and Expiry Date changed obviously.

Hasn't been a problem for me so far with PCs as the payment network has been the same for the old and new cards but there will definitely be a change if the payment network changes as part of the product change i.e. Visa -> Mastercard or Mastercard -> Visa, as the 1st digit of the card # indicates which payment network the card uses (Mastercard == 5, Visa == 4).

Go for the upgrade if it has value to you. Don't get attached to numbers.

I used to care about card numbers. However, I had fraudulent charges on my Discover, AMEX and AT&T (Citi) Mastercard. Fixing the issue required number changes.
