I have no negative experiences with Citi customer service, but that may be because I hardly ever need to contact my banks about issues.

But to minimize your feared declines/fraud tagging while traveling, there are two things you can do in Citi's app or website. You can alert them to times that you plan to be traveling, and you can optionally choose to share your location data with them.

citi1.jpg citi2.jpg

You would have to align this with your own views on how private you want your personal data to be. However, if you would allow Citi to track your location using the Enhanced Location Services method, I would guess that you would likely never trigger a fraud suspicion/decline at any merchant.

Hello, folks.

I am thinking about switching to use Double Cash as my main driver.

However, I have read a lot of bad things about Citi customer service and also service after fraud has occurred.

I have also heard that Citi can be obsessive about blocking purchases when they are a little different (i.e., in another state, etc.).

My wife and me will be taking a road trip through various states (unknown at this time) for two weeks in August.

I currently use AMEX Blue Cash Preferred for groceries and gas, and Chase Freedom Unlimited for all else. Citi DC sits in my sock drawer for all autopays.

I am a little reluctant, based on what I have read, to use Citi DC as my "all else" card, in spite of the extra half percent that Citi pays over Chase on everyday spend. I guess that peace of mind might be worth getting 1.5% instead of 2%.

This post is not about why don't I get another card . . .

Please share your thoughts !!

Never had a problem with Citi and use my AA exec card as my main driver and for some business spend as well. Large monthly spend and never a peep.

As for customer service, I have never had to call them since I had the card, between 9 or 10 years.

So IMO use as you wish.

My experience with citi is that their customer service SUCKS....automated lady, push 75 buttons to get to a human, ALWAYS. It is most annoying anytime you need customer support....even for something as simple as deleting a closed credit card on your on-line account...when you do get to a human - well, mostly they are cool and can help, mostly....but getting to them is a CHORE.

From the creditor side is I have a customer who lives in California and I am getting a charge in Wyoming is this legitimate or fraud. The creditor should select fraud first time everything time if there is no notice from the customer that they will be traveling.

In my 2 decades of using Citi cards I've had exactly 1 time where they declined the charge for potential fraud. It was about 10 years ago in Prague at a... less than reputable establishment... so I can't say I blame them. Even then, I just got a text to confirm it was me making the purchase and then it went through. I've never had a problem with them domestically and I travel quite a bit.

Like most of the others, I have had no issues with using it or customer service.

In fact I used the double cash when I needed a card and was afraid other issuers would question the spend.

Only thing about "Citi" for me was low credit limits for my spend and credit profile.

In my household, we've had two completely different experiences with Citi Double Cash customer service.

I have had no negative experiences and used DC as my main "catch all" card for almost a decade (just switched over to NFCU cashRewards Plus last year). On the other hand, P2 spent most of last year having multiple charges denied and having to go through various types of ID verification. After months of aggravation, P2 threw in the towel and just closed the account.

The only issue I've ever had with Citi is that every time I add my cards to my mobile wallet I have to call them and go through a really annoying security process. It's easily half an hour every time.

Other than that I've not had any complaints.

That said, I have thought about getting rid of my Double Cash. Now that they killed the Rewards+ off and I'm not getting 2.22% anymore, it doesn't really make much sense to use the card over my Navy Federal cashRewards Plus that also gets 2% but has no weird 1% now, 1% when you pay garbage, a limit that's 6 times what Citi gave me, and doesn't charge FTFs or cash advance fees. If it wasn't for the fact I make use of the virtual card numbers I would drop the Double Cash and I may still decide to do that eventually since my Capital One SavorOne, Citi Custom Cash, Apple Card, and Verizon VISA have virtual card numbers too.

It's easily half an hour every time.

Other than that I've not had any complaints.

That said, I have thought about getting rid of my Double Cash. Now that they killed the Rewards+ off and I'm not getting 2.22% anymore, it doesn't really make much sense to use the card over my Navy FederalcashRewardss Plus that also gets 2% but has no weird 1% now, 1% when you pay garbage, a limit that's 6 times whatCitii gave me, and doesn't chargeFTFss or cash advance fees. If it wasn't for the fact I make use of the virtual card numbers I would drop the Double Cash and I may still decide to do that eventually since my Capital OneSavorOnee,Citii Custom Cash, Apple Card, and Verizon VISA have virtual card numbers too.

I don't know if the cRR + works the same as the Flagship (I assume so?) but, with my Flagship, I can only redeem for cash (deposit in to NF savings) in $50 increments. Statement credit starting at $50+. This is a no go for a daily driver for me.

It doesn't. It works the same as a QuickSilver. As soon as the transaction posts you can redeem any amount. I actually got rid of my More Rewards because of that $50 threshold.

Throw in my two cents worth. My first contact with Citi Bank was 1979 for a checking account which I later added credit cards.

Over time I have had many different Citi products and still do today. The customer service has been good onshore but elsewhere not so much.

Will add that like many, I have had few CR contacts and when I did, they gave me good assistance. There have been a few frauds over time and Citi handled them well. My one comment on the less than stellar side is the credit limits have not been that outstanding but enough I could live them.

Repeating much of what has already been said in this thread. Use Citi Cards regularily.

I have had issues with Amex and Citi as it relates to traveling and this is WITH ME NOTIFYING THEM.

I told Amex a day or two before I went to NYC one time, and low and behold Im shopping at what used to be the Hugo Boss store doing some damage (after I alerted them of my travels!!!) and Amex declinded the charge as fraud and sent me text messages to confirm.. and this was on a five figure limit with very very well established history (even of traveling);

same thing has happened with Citi traveling in other states or cities when using my old CDP card... further Ive read far more reports of Citi going bats***** crazy on the fraud alerts and card shut downs.

BOA was late to the game once.. lol I caught a huaweii charge trying to go through and locked my card immediately. two weeks later BOA alerts me of a fraud attempt... yeah no s&&&T BOA.lol

I think we need to be very proactive and for chrissake LOCK your card if you aren't using it. Its so easy to lock and unlock cards these days if you have your phone with you. even if you are in the check out line and you got declined. politely ask them to wait two seconds let people go in front of you and hold your ground in line and then resume after unlocked. Im trying to teach the oldies that they must LOCK all cards at all times to prevent fraud themselves. (My identityy has been stolen 12+ times in the past 15 years so I've learned )

I noticed with I think Discover you can put the alert in yourself so some dumb CSR doesn't lazy out on it.

You NEED to have backup plans A b AND C in todays world so take both the cards.

I've used my Citi DC as a primary card in the past. I've had several cards with them for many years and I've never had a problem, including usiing my Premier card overseas.

I dusted off my DC the other day for a medium sized purchase at PetCo. citi had a 2.5% shopping offer on my DC, CC, and R+. Adding 2.5% to my DC 2% exceeded the 4% Smartly I was going to use.
