I'll wait to see what the refresh will bring as far as benefits go. I don't put high spend on my Platinum card but we more than make up the annual fee in benefits at the current AF. In fact, we could justify $1000 AF with the current benefits...

I have decent spend from work travel but it be really dumb for me to not put it on hotel/airline card as the rewards far greater.

What benefits do you think make that card worth it? I'm not seeing it.

Don't think they will do it as that is a threshold for most and a mental barrier they are already pushing it for most especially if they stick you with a preset spending limit. The churn rate on the platinum has to be pretty steep as once people get the bonus they usuallly dump it after a year and only become worse if they increase the AF.

The FHR benefits are pretty lucrative for us, as is the cell phone insurance. I've typed out the value we get from it in a different post but it far exceeds the AF with only organic spend. The lounge access helps too since my home base is DFW and they have a CL. Pretty sure we drink our af throughout the year lol.

Everyone should look at their current lifestyle and the spend they already do. If the credits cover what you already are doing then it makes total sense. If you are going out of your way to use credits, it is likely not the right card for you.

The FHR benefits are pretty lucrative for us, as is the cell phone insurance. I've typed out the value we get from it in a different post but it far exceeds the AF with only organic spend. The lounge access helps too since my home base is DFW and they have a CL. Pretty sure we drink our af throughout the year lol.

I've had the Platinum card continuously for about a decade, and the card's benefits have easily offset the annual fee (with the exception of the COVID period when I did not travel at all). However, the lounge benefits get harder to use every year and Clear Plus lines now seem to be slower than TSA-Pre. I will need to take a hard look at the terms of the refresh.

A downgrade to the current green card would allow me to retain my account history (it's one of my oldest cards due to backdating), but I'm seriously considering dropping Clear Plus which is the main cost offset for the Green. I believe that a downgrade to "Senior Green" is no longer allowed, but does anyone know if a PC to "Traditional Green" is still available?

should be fine as long as its not a Schwab or Morgan Stanley Plat.

Clear is slower than Pre- at my airport as well, and the Clear staff always seems to be the grumpiest and slowest moving employees in the entire airport - as if they're hoping to just be able to stand around for their entire shift, and you're bothering them by deciding to use your membership. There have been a few times that Clear has saved me tons of time during re-entry from foreign countries though.

My home airport was Clear's first location. Back then, Clear saved me a whole lot of time. Now, their scanners often have a problem with my fingerprints or my IDs which causes several minutes of delays as a supervisor is usually summoned to help. To be fair, the employees I've encountered are almost always very pleasant.

Most my flights are international so I get lounge access by default and I've always been just fine the TSA pre/global entry.

$1000 AF pretty dang steep.

If I traveled more, I might be able to drink the fee. Cell phone coverage is only a plus if you pay for the carrier coverage otherwise. In 30+ years of having cell phones, with 3 phones on my account most of that time, I've never taken the coverage. During that time, none of the phones on my account have ever been lost or stolen. I've paid for one screen replacement out of pocket < $100, and one battery service $30. Taking Verizon's coverage, I'd be have paid thousands over the years for coverage. Occasionally there are upgrade offers without requiring a trade in, in that case I keep the old phones around just in case I need to replace until I can get an upgrade but it has never been necessary. Worst case I'd buy a cheap phone until I can do a carrier upgrade.

We've got 3 teenagers so phone breakages are twice a year at least lol

its a niche card for sure and definitely not a good fit for everyone's needs.
