Discover Targeted Offer: 0% Purchase APR

One reason I enjoy keeping a relationship with some of my lenders is the special offerings I receive. Sometimes they are for some sort of enhanced rewards. Sometimes they are for referral bonuses. Sometimes they are for balance transfer APRs. The latest one I received from Discover, though, is a rare one outside of a new card SUB. Discover gave me nine months of 0% APR on new purchases. Unlike a BT offer, this doesn't entail any BT fees or low interest in-lieu-of waiving a fee. My offer began 10/31/25 and ends 07/30/26.

By the way, I also have two BT offers from Discover: One with 0% APR for 12 months, but a 4% BT fee; the other with no BT Fee but a reduced 6.99% APR and up to 15 months repayment. But either of these would cost me money.

With the 0% APR on purchases and with keeping those funds in a HYSA at 4% would be equivalent to earning up to 3% additional cash back on charges, less any taxes owed on the HYSA interest but partially offset by compounding on the interest deposits. (The exact additional amount depends on how long the balance is carried plus the exact rate of return on savings. But assuming 4% APY, 0.04/12 = 0.0033333 x up to 9 months = 0.03.) That's in addition to regular cash back (1% or 5%.) So starting in November, with 5% on Amazon and drug stores up to $1500, I could earn 8% on the first $1500. I don't usually purposefully run up a balance, but this would be an excellent time to do so. Front-loading the purchases in the early part of the promotion would be the way to go since the interest earned on deposits would decline as time ran out. (0.0033333 x 3 months = just an additional 1%, meaning that it would be equivalent to a 2% card at the six-month point for general 1% spending, or 6% on the $1500 category.) Therefore, the offer would not add much value to my rewards after about May 1st.

The key to doing something like this, of course, is to make sure you have the money to pay it in full prior to the end of the promotional period, as well as recognizing the potential FICO penalties. And, of course, actually moving the funds to HYSA (or not withdrawing them for payments.) Also, for members with a thin or weak profile, running up a high utilization could lead to adverse action from other lenders. Fortunately for me, my credit limit ($52K) is high enough on this card that I could run up a pretty good balance and still have relatively low utilization. But I just thought it might be interesting to the community about the possibilities with these sorts of offers.

These kinds of 0% purchase offers were incredibly common with the old citi SYW MasterCard. Longer than 9 months too, if I remember correctly. I don't know yet with the newly converted ThankYouRewards MC. But, for me, while I understand the financial benefit of "using someone elese's money" for 9+ months, it's just not in my nature to not PIF every month. I always pass on these offers.

Appreciate hearing about your offer. I think this helps highlight one of the benefits to having multiple lenders and being able to receive multiple types of offers. I don't think a Discover card is a must have, especially when it's consolidated to a single bank, but the offers might outweigh the standard benefits of the card.
