Friend canceled ALL cards after multiple AAs

I friend told me he canceled all of his credit cards recently. Yup, ALL of them! A lot of his cards had limits in the $10K-$25K+ range. I know he used them regularly but he didn't take advantage of most of the limits. Maybe a few thousand here and there. And he sometimes carried balances. He told me he received notice from 4 of the companies. They slashed his limits. AMEX, Discover, maybe Wells Fargo and I don't remember the other. He got so pissed off that he canceled those cards and everything else he had. He has good income, never misses any payments, has a mortgage, paid off both vehicles sometime last year. No issues at all with credit. Scores in the low 800s. I can't believe he did that! So now he's using cash and a debit card.

That's crazy. Did you tell him the downsides of relying on a debit card? At the bare minimum he should open up a second checking account to transfer money into so that when he uses his debit card, he's not risking a fraudster having direct access to his real checking account.

@masscredit, what was the catalyst that stimulated AA? You mentioned that it was across multiple/all issuers, so clearly something profile-related was deemed problematic (across the board) to set this whole process in motion.

I'm curious as to what that was.

Yeah, same question.

That's a lot AA at the same time from the big issuers, so something is going on.

I've know him for over 40 years so I pretty much know what he has going on. No credit issues. Everything is paid on time. He's into credit enough to know what his scores are but it's not a hobby or anything like that. Maybe sometime came up on his reports to trigger this. I suggested he take a look at them. I thought he was kidding when he told me he canceled everything. That's not like him.

Did your friend recently start tuning in to a lot of Dave Ramsey ? That might explain this situation

The lenders can excercise AA at any time that they want. I got hit by Amex recently and they shut down all of my cards.

Your friend should do better risk management. Was he/she high on something? The lenders may close accounts but I do not see any reason for a person to close accounts, unless there is AF.

Around here I think it's more common to apply for cards after drinking (it has been admitted to several times that I've seen) than to close them. lol

So OP should get the friend drunk, put them in front of a credit card app site and things will be restored (at some hit to AAoA!)

@BallBounces Nope. He told me he hadn't changed anything. Wasn't applying for new credit, never misses payments, paid off his two vehicles over a year early. Nothing that would spook these companies.

@xenon3030 I can see if it was one company. But a few reduced his limits. As for him closing all of this accounts. He was really pissed off about the AAs. He's done the right thing for years and then that happened. So he was like "F credit!" Scores are in the 800s and good income. So he said he'll just use his debit card. Plus, his wife still has credit cards.

Mission accomplished by the issuers. If he was doing everything right, then the issuers were losing money on him. So he punished himself, which he has every right to do so.

You can rent vehicles using debit cards. Recently found this out after losing my CC's. Pretty much most of the top rental car agencies will accept a debit card when you show a confirmed return flight reservation. And several of the rental agencies don't even require any deposit hold. I found that part interesting. More often than not there is around a extra 20-25% deposit charged to the total bill when using a credit card. Of course that extra deposit does fall off once the bill hits your credit card.
