If you guys hadn't all recommended to bring down the UTL on the BOFA Plat, it wouldn't occurred to me. I wanted to pay $2400 but didn't have enough to bring it down more. Then I remember I could move credit lines with BOFA. I did that originally when I got both cards. Crap card anyway but at least it served its purpose.

Now the hardest part - waiting til all balances updates with the bureas LOL. Painful waiting.

Hello,

I need advice on what the best strategy is to pay my cards off - did the stupid mistake to use them to expand my new business instead of using business credit. Now I've made about 60k in payments and still owe quite a bit - about 56k and some of it is 0 interest and some have some hefty interest.

Now I am debating which of the following to take:

1) Pay off the cards with the highest interest first

2) bring down some of the high balances to boost myfico score and potentially do a balance transfer/continue to pay them off

3) Alternative solution/advice from you all

Now, right now I have about 4k to use, and then end of the month another 3k. Then in March I will have 6k (potentially more but I rather play it safe) and same for April.

Below is the breakdown of my debt. What do you recommend?

Current FICO score 8 are the following (pulled yesterday):

EX 683

EQ 684

TU 690

No late payments, derogatories and only 2 new cards

The Care Credit (APR) and the AmEx Plat (APR+Util) both jump out to me. I'd get those gone (finances first), then try and pay down the BoA Plat due to Uti before getting the USB card paid which is your 3rd highest APR, but with a smaller balance. Any of the cards with high UTI will hurt your scores (fico second) until they are all below 49/29%. You'd also have to look at the 0% APR cards and what their interest terms will be once the promos expires. Do either of those backdate the interest if it's not PIF?

I agree with @Vinjints with one other consideration. You have a couple over 89% util. That's considered maxed and could invite balance chasing. Sync seems to be known for this. You might try to get everything under 89% to avoid that possibility.

Another possibility might be getting a lower interest personal loan to pay off the high interest accounts. To do that, you'd benefit from higher scores. As you reduce total debt, total utilization will come down, helping scores. Scores are also impacted by your highest individual utiluzation. That's where you might game your scores a little. The thresholds are at 9%, 29%, 49%, 69%, and 89%. As @Vinjints suggested, you should see a score bump if you can get all under 49%.

Agree with above two posters.

Need to both lower utilization on the >85% cards to lessen the chance of CL decrease or closure.

Also need to attack high interest cards first and save some money.

Those two things should help scores and profile some.

Going for a loan or couple of zero interest cards would be phase two after the above.

Biggest risk that jumps out at me is the balance chasing scenario that others have mentioned. If possible and sensible based on interest rate and required payment, I would get a personal loan for whatever it takes to get all utilization below 48.9%. See this post for reference as to the util/score thresholds folks have mentioned. You don't want to end up with CL slashes from lenders freaking out over your utilization percentages -- and make no mistake, you can be on-time across the board and one day one will get mad and push the button (or its algorithms will) anyway.

Once you have the util% handled -- which will likely help your score -- then I would personally start hacking down high-interest debt first, with the caveat that if there is any easy-to-zero-the-balance that stands out, might do that preferentially.

Rough outlines of a strategy, I know, but hopefully you get the idea.

The most important thing above all is to make sure that you don't get cash-crunched by your monthly payment outflows. Cash flow is king. Keep it and you can manage flexibly. Lose it and you're toast, even if the lenders don't twitch/notice.

I made the mistake of personal loans/credit cards to finance a business as well. Ended up not working out when the cash-flow crunch hit. My advice would be follow what the above posters say with regards to getting the 90%+ down below 89% and work your way down. I would avoid the personal loan but YMMV. Good luck!

Check on the balance transfer fees. P2 just did a balance transfer from Synchrony to CapitalOne which was offering 0%APR for 15 months from account opening. They charged 3% fee for the transfer. It saved on potential interest fees with Synchrony (Her 0% APR promo period with Synchrony is ending soon)

Is your American Express Platinum Pay Over Time? I haven't used Amex Platinum in a while, but when I used it, it was pay in full every month.

For Business, you may want to consider Chase Ink or Amex. Chase has the 5/24 rule. They look at income and bank statements for consideration. I think I had a similar profile to you 690 credit score with maybe $30K in CC debt when I got Chase Business Ink in 2017. At the time I was approved for $13K.

As you realized, this helps since your business debt can be on your business cards. Your business cards will not show up on your personal credit report (so it may postively impact your debt to credit ratio). You are good with payments, but just as a FYI. If you default on a business card, it will show up on your personal report.

Some people pay strictly mathematically (highest interest first). Some pay to simplify things (smallest balance first, sock drawer it, so you have less cards to think about at manage). Or combination of both. Another person mentioned pay to bring utilization less than 48.9%

As others mentioned, some lenders balance chase or lower credit limit as you pay it down. Synchrony which is the bank for Care Credit is famous for this.

You do what feels best for you as long as it gets you to a point where you are paying 0 interest.

Are you at the point where you dont have to rely on credit (increasing debt)?

With that said, I'd say a focus for Phase I:

1. Amex Plat 29%, Care Credit 33%, US Bank 26%,  ($19K)

I'm the type to simplify and US Bank at $1041 is easy to get rid of and it's your third highest interest rate.
As for Amex Plat, Care Credit. maybe get a low-interest loan or 0% APR Balance Transfer Card. It might not cover all. You'll have to decide if you want to reduce utlization to less than 48.8% and when. 690 is perfect for Capital One. If you prequalify, if you get the one that gives $200 SUB, that generally means a higher limit. If you prequalify for a "Card for Good Credit" with no SUB, that means a low limit and would probably not help you much.

2. Someone can give a second opinion, but I recommend to start looking for a potential business card. Benefits are great, but if not don't worry about it. Some business cards have less benefits than the personal ones. But the biggest benefit is to get your future business debt off of your personal FICO, but then there's the issue with interest rates, unless you 0% APR intro. Chase Ink, Amex are great business cards and they are generous with limits for business long term. Chase does a lot more vetting for Business than personal. I think my bank statements and income really helped at the time, as mentioned before my credit score and debt was similar to you. I had less debt $30K but higher utilizaiton. My TCL at the time was not $100K.

3. Get BOFA Platinum under 48.8% (Bring Balance below $8540, Pay off $7200)

4. People may disagree, but for me it feels good to pay things off and just forget it, I'd knock out Discover even though it has a low interest rate at 16%, then Truist. This would reduce the number of accounts I have to monitor and manage. For me personally, it feels good to pay only 5 accounts vs 9 accounts.

BOFA $8K
NASA $7K
Apple $5K
Lowes $9K
Loan/0% Card $8K

In 6-8 months, you'll be at around $37K balance, but at least you are managing 5 accounts instead of 9.

If I could go back, what would help me is to just stop all usage on the cards and put them away after I pay it off, and try to work towards dedicating one to two card to use, and pay off what I used in that month. I was not able to do that, so I ended up just closing all my cards, setting up payment plans or settling (tanked my credit), and just using Cash/Debit for a year and started over from scratch.

You have potential to growing your credit limits on your main cards like BOFA Plat or NASA. Hopefully in the long term your main cards have higher CL $30K+ which will reduce your utilzation %.

What is your monthly spend at?

First of all - I just want to say that I feel so lucky to be part of this community. THANK YOU all for giving me such wonderful advice and given me so much to consider and think about!!

Now I really HATE paying interest - and originally I really wanted to pay off Amex and CareCredit - but the high balances and high UTL are killing my scores. Even though my business qualifies for lending based on revenue etc....its my personal credit that's bringing it down and preventing moving foward with business credit. So to get out of hot waters, I decided to bring the maxed out cards down. The Amex and CareCredit, I used last month, so I'm going to eat that interest charge this month and then figure out how to pay them.

Now this is what I did......

BOFA - Went from 90% UTL now at 63% UTL - Paid down $2400. I requested a CLI on the BOFA Alaska card, got approved and went from $2100 to $3500. I no longer need the card (originally got it when I went to Hawaii for the bonus) so I transferred the new $3500 CL towards the BOFA Plat and now the BOFA Plat is sitting at a 21,000 CL. The annual fee was coming up soon, so perfect time to close. I did try to request a CLI for the Plat and by mistake I left out a **bleep** freaking zero on my yearly salary so of course I got the 7-10 days message. I'm hoping this balance going down makes a huge difference on my scores.

NASA - I paid $447 and brought UTL down from 71% to 67%

LOWES- Paid $1000 and UTL went down from 80% to 72%. If I pay $591 more, then I can bring it down to 67% (I'll probably do in a week just gotta see a few things in my finanes). This one stinks since its 0% for Lowes, but one of the promotions was expiring in May 2026. I figured might as well play it cautious and start paying now.

Here are the LOWES promos
Reg Deferred Interest/With Pay 05/26/2026 31.99% $3,525.85 $0.00 2D - now all I have to do is pay off 2500+ by May.
Reg Deferred Interest/With Pay 06/25/2026 31.99% $378.45 $0.00 2D
Reg Deferred Interest/With Pay 11/25/2026 31.99% $2,069.76 $0.00 2D
Reg Deferred Interest/With Pay 02/23/2027 31.99% $6,173.46 $0.00 2D

In total I paid around $3800, and still have 1k personal cash left, but I rather hold on to that. Things are always hitting my bank anyway. I'm worried about touching the business income right now since Feb is a slow month and I have to pay March rent and employees. But if by the end of the month I have a surplus, I'll put that towards the cards.

Now next round will be bringing down CareCredit from 63% UTL to 47% by paying down $1966 by the end of the month when its due. Also, for Apple its due on the 28th and not 20th (I'm full of typos today), so I'll be paying $1,016 to bring it down from 83% to 67% UTL.

So by the end of the month- there will be no cards maxed out (well maybe the Amex Plat Charge card) and if pay the $591 on lowes, then all of them will be under 67% or below. Out of the 80's club.

Here is how everything will look (without me paying the $591 on lowes)

Card Name

Credit Limit

Balance

UTL %

Alliant

$       2,500.00

$              -

0%

Amex Blue

$       1,000.00

$              -

0%

Barclays

$       7,900.00

$              -

0%

Discover 1

$       6,086.88

$              -

0%

Home Depot

$       2,700.00

$              -

0%

Nordstrom

$       1,650.00

$              -

0%

US Bank

$       4,100.00

$   1,041.00

25%

Discover 2

$       5,000.00

$   1,929.00

39%

Truist

$       6,500.00

$   2,790.00

43%

Care Credit

$     12,000.00

$   5,640.00

47%

BOFA Plat

$     21,000.00

$13,324.00

63%

NASA

$     10,700.00

$   7,168.00

67%

Apple

$       6,500.00

$   4,355.00

67%

Lowes

$     12,000.00

$   8,631.00

72%

Amex Plat

$     10,000.00

$10,419.48

104%

TOTAL

$  109,636.88

$55,297.48

50%

Once my new balances have updated with the bureas, I'll see where my scores are. Then I will try to request CLI increases across the board and wait for any potential CLI to report (hopefully that will give me another boost) and then either apply for a business line of credit (bluevine has been offering it but I'm afraid to pull the trigger) or personal loan. I just want to pay it all off and no continue to incur interest. I will also look at cards with balance transfers. Citi says I pre-qualify, and Capital One says I don't quality. I won't apply until my scores are much higher. I need to get out of the 600s club.

I will give an update once the credit reports shows the changes!!!!

Again, thank you all so much for giving me such amazing wonderful advice!! I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.
