amex platinum card holders i just wanted to know how it feels to be part of the elite lol.. reading on these forums and seeing your sigs with your cards and limits and scores and talking about monthly spending it is truly inspiring and makes me want to work hard to be in a position like that one day.. i come from a low income neighborhood so credit was never a topic or taught but thanks to all the helpful people here i understand alot more then i ever did i appreciate it very much🤝.. having the platinum one day would be a credit dream of mine

I've never understood what was so 'elite' about it. Do you want it just to have it, or have you crunched the numbers to ensure you'll easily cover the staggering $895 AF, and then some?

I've held an Amex Platinum continuously for the past 10 years. I keep it because the rewards and perks align well with my spending and travel patterns. I don't use it for status. In fact, I rarely carry it in my wallet unless I need it for airport lounge access or a Resy dine. Almost all of my Platinum spending transactions are carried out via a website or through an app, so no one sees what type of card I am using.

I'm pretty happy with my scores, but there are many on this forum with even higher scores. None of us got there overnight. It takes years of stable behavior to climb up the credit score ladder. You can get there too!

If the $900 AF will be a 'value' to you then certainly no harm to go for it. I can currrently justify my Gold AF but cant for the Plat which I did have a while ago.

Moreover, we have a friend that wont be renewing her Centurion as she doesnt get value from it.

I just wanna say, there's nothing "elite" about the Platinum and carrying one does not make one part of an elite group. These days AMEX is no longer synonymous with prestige as it once was back in the days. Anyone with a pulse, some income, and somewhat decent credit (650+) can easily get one. The card really is intended for elevated travel experiences and if that's something that falls within your current lifestyle, go for it as long as it makes sense and you can afford the $895 AF. If there's anything to aspire for, I'll give that to the Centurion card - that's where the real elite is lol!

That's been my experience. I mainly use the actual card for checking in to FHR hotels and lately the quarterly Resy dining credit.

Like others said, it's just a credit product. If it fits your needs and you get value out of it then go for it. It's not even that hard of a card to get, but make sure you're getting value out of it.

As others have said, there is nothing particularly elite about the AmEx Platinum these days. Maybe 40+ years ago, but not today. It's a very recognizable card with a high AF that is basically a "coupon book" of offers that you can either make back the fee on if you pay attention, or lose money on.

Just don't be "that person" who wants to flash it around and use it for everything. It's really only good for airline tickets and a few other specific things when you're using the offers and benefits. I cringe when I see those people, because they really don't understand how bad it is as a go-to. I've gone through two of them, and it doesn't suit me to have one right now. Maybe again in the future.

There is definitely not the prestige as 20 years ago. Also its more difficult getting exclusive benefits from the card. I remember when I could get concert tickets last minute for sold out shows and into restaurants when they were full by calling the concierge. I tried using it in the recent past and it didn't have the same level of customer service as in the past.

The centurion lounge access is valuable though as I am traveling again.

I guess it is harder for them now that other cards have stepped up their game. Yet for the fee they charge they should be on their game.

Holding a specific card shouldn't factor into your overall plans. Find the right card, and the results will produce themselves. They are unique to you. I've run the calculations forward and backward for my household, and the Amex platinum card just doesn't fit into any profile I intend to utilize.

I've actually run this scenario among not only the Amex Platinium, but also the Aspire, Surpass, and Delta Reserve, and I've identified a path that works for me tremendously well, and keeps me in annual vacations at prestigous locations year over year. It's a piece of the puzzle I wasn't yet able figure out, until only recently. It solves ALL issues, even among credit seeking status utilzing hard inquiry limitations, and keeps vacationing around the globe cheap, annually. The platinum card can't produce or assist with this at all. None. Best of all, I don't have to play around with welcome bonuses across so many cards any longer.

Find out what works for you. It shouldn't be card specific, but rather strategy specific.

And for that matter, if you want to play the game, always look out for new cards perhaps from less well-known issuers that might fit your needs for a time better than the established cards with any perceived status you think they have. For example, US Bank Smartly was a good choice for many of us to jump on: sure, it get nerfed REALLY quickly, but those that got the good nerf still have a 4% cashback card on nearly everything (terms and conditions apply).

@newcredit I've had this card for about 10-15 years now. Got it because, at the time, it was the best travel card and I travel a lot for work. This card isn't necessarily something you work toward. It is a travel and lifestyle card. It isn't even a rewards card unless you travel a lot. It is certainly not a status card as Amex hands these out to anyone with a pulse, half decent credit score, and willing to fork over $895.00 per year. Sure, Amex is marketing to the affluent. Sure, there are benefits and credits that come with that hefty fee, but if all you want to do is whip it out in Starbucks to pay for your morning coffee nobody cares. Seriously. All anyone behind the counter cares about is that the charge goes through so they can move on to the next customer rather than waiting for you to dig out another card or, God forbid, pay in cash.

The whole purpose of credit cards is to provide convenience, flexibility, and security. I don't have to carry cash or checks. I can borrow money for 25 days and pay it all back at the end of that time. I get a nice, itemized bill to see where my money went. As long as you remember that, they can be a great tool in your financial toolbox. Get sidetracked, and they can become your worst enemy. Wanting a card for "status" that has an annual fee is not being fair to yourself. You work hard for your money. There are enough people, companies, and governments trying to take it away. Don't let the banks get more of it with all their flashy marketing!

All that to say that credit is credit. What you do work towards is increasing your scores to obtain better loan and insurance rates, living debt free, saving for retirement, and living within your budget. This is what is important in life financially. Not what piece of plastic (or metal) is in your wallet.

And, yes, I'm a Boomer.

Congrats for taking the time to learn about credit and setting goals. I'd like to recommend your goal to be the ability to obtain any card you want but will only choose the card the benefits you most.
