Chase isn't necessarily a hard no if you've had a bankruptcy. I threw two Chase cards in with my Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2020 and this year I was approved for a Chase Amazon Visa through Reconsideration.

They lost about $7500 plus interest.

The new Amazon Visa has a $5100 CL.

Just because you burned Chase doesn't mean there's no way back in. The Apple card is much like a store card in that Apple has some say in getting the bank to relax approval requirements. Plus, you already have an open account, so that bypasses Chase's auto-reject if they see a bankruptcy on a new application.

Hopefully Chase didn't agree to relax them to where anyone with a pulse could get one and they lose money with a credit card, like Goldman did.

I would say that's like losing money on a casino, but....it's happened.

It seems like cards are being bought out more often now. By that I mean the banks changing. Like Discover to Capital One and Apple to Chase. I had a Ch 7 BK that discharged two years ago and my rebuild is going well. I have heard Chase is big on blacklisting BK filers.

That said, I was approved for an Apple Card with a $5000 limit two months ago. Currently Apple Card is through Goldman Sachs whom I've had a good record with in the past. Several successful loans prior to the BK. Chase on the other hand I took down (hard) in my Ch 7.

Two Questions:

1. Should I expect that Chase will cancel the Apple Card once they take over from Goldman Sachs in 2027? It's a great card and the 17% interest rate is one of my lowest.

2. Conversely, I took down Discover in the BK but have a good relationship with Capital One. Do you think I could get a Discover now that Capital One has acquired them?

Cap1 has always been one of the easiest creditors to get back in with after burning them, either with or w/o BK. Not sure if their Discover branded cards will immediately start to follow these same processes but it wouldn't surprise me if they do eventually, so bottom line is I think you'll probably be let back in at some point.

Discover wasn't one of my bankruptcy creditors, so I got a Secured Discover as soon as the discharge happened and it graduated two months before they said it would. They upped the limit and gave back the $200 deposit.

Just getting one open account in good standing immediately after bankruptcy can raise your FICO score by 40-50 points, which is good because you just came out of bankruptcy, your credit is terrible, and you'll need all the help you can get.

While I can’t speak to the specific card OP mentioned, I closed my Chase Amazon Prime Visa Signature and Discover It credit cards when I enrolled in a debt management plan through a nonprofit credit counseling agency. I successfully completed the DMP in 2 years and 8 months. However, shortly after finishing, I applied for credit cards from Wells Fargo, Petal, Chase, and Discover, but was denied by all of them. Surprisingly, Capital One gave me a chance and approved me for a Capital One Savor Rewards World Elite Mastercard with a $1,000 credit limit. Since the card is unsecured, I didn’t have to provide a security deposit.

Now, after paying off significant credit card debt with Chase and Discover, I have the opportunity to rebuild my credit without needing to use a secured credit card.

It could go either way. If you show positive usage of your card before Chase takes it over, that's going to help your chances for sure.

Were you less than 5/24?

Called the recon number. You can call 888-270-2127 (which I found on these forums in the first place) and ask for the "reconsideration department". I actually found the number on these forums and Reddit. Chase doesn't publish it widely but it is a Chase number.

What did you say?

I was forwarded to a credit analyst who said the reason for denial was that Chase lost money on credit cards it had given me in the past, and she asked why I had filed bankruptcy back then and what I've been up to lately as far as working on my credit and how I was handling my bills.

I explained that the bankruptcy was a tsunami of the COVID-19 pandemic, the nursing home threatening to throw my grandmother out because my uncle wasn't paying her bill, and an ex-partner that basically forced me out of my house. I said it's not how I like to be seen and I was paying all of my bills and trying to rebuild my credit as fast as I possibly could. That I did not have any new credit negatives since the bankruptcy filing in 2020, and that my goal was to have a FICO score "above 800 again". I stated that I wanted the Chase card because it had better terms and features than the Synchrony version which I had for two years and always paid in full, and that if approved, I wanted to close the Synchrony card and do business with Chase for Amazon purchases.

Did they need bank statements and tax returns?

Nope.

Were you less than 5/24?

Over. Probably 6 or 7. Something like that. Chase makes 5/24 exceptions for the Amazon Visa and you still get the $250 Amazon gift card upon approval.

I was also approved for a $5100 credit line, which was $600 more than my Synchrony Amazon had. And I feel that's a respectable limit considering my bk7 with the other cards and the fact that Chase doesn't like seeing bankruptcy notations.

The account was approved by her, but it still had to go through the Fraud department to make sure it was really me that opened it, then I had to recover an old online account that was still in their system, which also took some doing and speaking with several people.

Chase will actually lock you out from calling in for security codes if you do it more than a few times, at least for a while. So once you're back in to your online account, make sure your email and phone number are correct then opt-in for two factor authentication by phone and e-mail, or it may lock you out on other devices.
