US Bank Shopper Cash Rewards Notes

I decided to PC my Altitude Reserve to Shopper Cash Rewards... before noting that this card has a $95 AF. Oh well. We will see how the 6% merchant selections work out for me. Most likely will PC again to a simpler 2% (2.5% with checking balance) card.

Anyhoo, this card has some "features". In the material sent with the card, the logo lights up when you tap to pay. That's worth something, right?

Also, they send you a book of "convenience checks" to use, with no expiration date and a $5 or 5% cash advance fee, and a 30.49% APR on check advances. Eyewatering.

So, yeah, short term will try the card, enjoy the light show at Nordstrom, then move along to another US Bank card later.

FYI, It looks like USB's current SUB is a $250 bonus after $2K spend, plus waived AF for the first year.

@NRB525, congrats on the successful PC!

I tried out this card with the first year AF waived and the $250 SUB. My logic was even if the cashback math doesn't work out, the SUB covers 2+ years of AFs.

It will all depend on how much you spend at each merchant per quarter, but please note that with the two 6% categories and the $6000/year ($1500/quarter) spending cap minus the ongoing $95 AF, your maximum potential cashback return becomes ~4.4%.

Now, there are "offers" plus the 3% cashback category that can help offset the AF even more, but our spending habits didn't personally jive with this card. I ultimately replaced it with two "no annual fee" cards: US Bank Cash+ (5% on two categories; we chose fast food and bills & utilities) and OnePay CashRewards Mastercard (5% back at Walmart). These beat the return on the Shopper Cash Rewards card for us without having to worry about any minimum spend or AFs.

Let us know how things work out on this card, and thank you for posting about it lighting up! I rarely use my physical cards (only digital wallets if at all possible), so I'll have to try this out the next time I'm at Menards or Walmart!

I had this card.

You just have to do the math to know if it'll work for you.

I think it is very limited for what's required.

The list of stores is quite short imho.

With the AF, you'll have to spend a lot of money at 2 stores from that list.

The 2 most practical ones are Walmart and Target.

My primary use was something to replace the Walmart credit card when it was discontinued.

Eventually the Paypal debit card filled that hole.

Once the AF hit, I PC'd the Shopper to a Cash+.

If you do decide to PC after the fee hits, they will refund the prorated amount.

Good points, @DoppelgangerD. If you have signifcant/regular spend at any two or more of these retailers, the (up to) ~4.4% would beat most other cards at those specific merchants. My family just doesn't spend enough at any of them regularly to make it worthwhile for us.

Honestly, the myFICO forum folks provide enough emotional illumination to power a small village. My card doesn’t need to join the lighting department.

There are data points from others about PC'ing to the Shoppers Rewards Card and getting US Bank to drop the first year AF. And that is what I plan on doing, after my first year. PC shoppers Rewards to another US Bank card and then PC a different US Bank card to the Shoppers Rewards card. Could also just reapply and get a new Shoppers Rewards Card. Don't think there is any rules prohibiting a quick reaquiring with US Bank. Otherwise this card is not worth the AF, at least for myself. But it is the best Walmart CC option.

But, I really don't see this card penciling out, without avoiding the $95 AF. And, it would be a shame to miss out on the $250 intro offer (and first year AF waived).

Not to mention, I hate Portrait cards, lol! Or, even worse, cards that can't decide if they are Portrait or Landscape!

It is technically portrait orientation, but when it is landscape in my wallet, the card name is on the top long edge, so it tells me nicely what card it is. Unlike many other cards, like my three Chase Freedom variants, which bury the name in the center of the card, and have simlar color schemes.

I got to use the Shopper Cash Rewards card yesterday! The icon does light up!

Note: You need to be watching the card as you Tap to Pay, because that light is very quick to flash on then off.

Note: On OnePay, you have to have Walmart+ ($98/year) to get the additional 2% compare to baseline 3% card.

If one needs to get subscription/membership, one needs to keep membership cost benefits separate from CC or debit card rewards. I consider my four memberships by themselves

- Costco is for primary discounted gas and access to some warehouse discount items.

- Sams Club discounted membership is for primary discounted gas discount and special discounted items.

- Walmart+ discounted membership (see AARP membership discount which is better than student limited features discount) for 10 cents/gallon gas discount on most of time lowest price gas, free Paramount+ subscription and free same day shipping after 3 hours.

- Target 360 Circle (free offer from my organic spend during household goods sale) for Target free shipping and no fee on area stores delivery via Shipt. My supermarket charges additional fee per item and delivery fee. I currently have free shipping but I cannot use the supermarket digital coupons when using Shipt.

I use CCC via drugstore category to get Walmart gift cards at Walgreens to use them at Walmart and Sams Club and their gas stations. I have them in Walmart or Sams Club Wallet. I also get bank offers or my rotating category CCs rewards which include Walmart or discounts stores.

I am interested US Bank Shopper card for 1st year for

- 6%/$1,500/quarter for Apple and Walmart

- 3%/$1,500/quarter for wholesale club or utilities

- 1.5% on everything else

I would PC to US Bank Cash+ to complement my other Cash+/ELAN Max Rewards category CCs for "department stores (eBay) and "electronic stores" (Apple).
