The Green is forgotten about most of the time because, for good or ill, Amex has kind of neglected it over the years compared to Gold and Platinum and it's value for the fee usually isn't considered as good as the Gold. If you want to truly maximize Amex sub points, then ideal would be to go in order Green first, then Gold, and last Platinum, though I think most, myself included, skipped the Green and started with Gold.

In my case, the airport Southwest flys out of also has lots of Delta flights which I think is an Amex partner, but yeah, if your's is basically all Southwest, then Amex probably isn't ideal for you. The Chase Sapphire Preferred might make more sense so you can better use the points for flights.

Sounds like you'll get reimbursed for travel; that's very nice!

To answer one of your other questions, you unfortunately can't convert the rewards from the Blue Cash Preferred into Amex's MR points. Sad but true. I think lots of people would love to be able to to that.

Hi everyone! I’m hoping for more of a long-term strategy discussion than simply “what card should I get next?" I’m trying to build a credit card portfolio that makes sense over the next 5–10 years rather than chasing short-term rewards.

Current profile: I currently have one card, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred ($1,000 limit, opened June 2026). My credit profile is in a bit of an unusual transition because my oldest credit-building account (Mine/Fizz) was closed when the company shut down. As a result, Experian is currently unscorable, while TransUnion and Equifax are both 676. My oldest active tradeline is now my rent reporting account, followed by the BCP. I earn about $48,000/year through a graduate fellowship (not W-2 income), have no debt, always pay my statement balance in full, and my spending is pretty typical for a PhD student: groceries, dining, minimal gas, subscriptions, and rent (which can’t be paid by credit card).

I’m not in a rush to apply for another card—I want to build a smart long-term strategy. Over the next several years my travel will increase substantially (conferences, flights home, research, and eventually interviews), so I’m trying to decide whether it makes more sense to stick with cash back until my travel patterns are clearer or start building a transferable points ecosystem now. I’m also wondering how much living in Chicago should influence that decision, since I’ll likely fly mostly out of Midway with occasional flights from O’Hare. The cards I’ve looked at most are the Capital One Savor, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Freedom Unlimited, and the Venture. If you were in my position, how would you approach it?

Your score should be in good shape soon if you use BCP responsibly. For your next card, Cap 1 Venture and Chase Sapphire Preferred are two of the best travel reward options right now, per credit card sites like wallet hub, so I'd lean toward them - especially since they work well wherever/however you travel. But a lot depends on what the initial bonus offers look like when you're ready to apply. I'd definitely give it a few months at least. And at some point, you might want to get a flat rate cash back card with no fee. Put it on the list

First I'd clarify if your PhD program reimburses you for conference and research flights/hotel stays or if they book it on your behalf. If they have you book the them and then reimburse you, then you can basically get free cashback or points for those. Since you already have the Blue Cash Preferred, you generally should be able to get other Amex cards without a hard pull. The Amex Green and Gold are pretty good options especially if you can align your signup just before a trip to help with the sub. The Gold in particular is usually pretty good with the 4x points on groceries and dining. The Platinum might be a bit out of your range for now and because of Amex's new family rules, if you get the Platinum first, then you can't get the sub on the Gold or Green after.

Wekcome to the forum

Let me congratulate you for doing some planning. The big problem there is many cards are nurfed over time, take a look at some threads about usb cards.

Where I'm coming from, retired, occasional travel, not a lot of spend. I'm team cash back, but also have travel cards.

Ditto @DakotaM about travel you don't pay for, it doesn't count.

I also have BCP, make sure you hit the sub spend. For those of us with less spend, the sub is a bigger deal.

Myself, I try to stay away from fee cards. I just got usb go visa, $200 sub for $1000 spend, 4% on dining, no fee, unlike amex gold.

Travel cards. I have usb connect, 4% on travel, including gas, 5% on travel booked through them, it also has limited airport lounge access. I also have nfcu flagship, $49 annual fee, but free prime. They also reimburse $120 for global entry/tsa pre check, a nice perk. The travel category really depends on the who pays answer.

Another favourite is

https://www.aven.com/rewards-visa-card

No sub, but 3% on everything, a nice catchall. If you do a lot of Amazon, the chase prime gives 5% back.

I hope some of this is useful.

The more questions you ask, the better the answers.

You really need some spend for those to work.

Another thing, most of the big banks who issue these cards offer subs for checking. As an example, I opened a usb checking for a $500 sub, then collected another $500 sub for the connect visa. I sort of made it a hobby that year, I made over $3000 in subs. Some of the banks favour banking customers on credit apps.

Here's a great link,

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/

Here's another,

https://bankrewards.io/

Thanks @DakotaM! I didn't even think about the Green, it seems like a good middle ground as opposed to the Gold or Platinum. I was thinking about downgrading the Blue Cash Preferred to the Blue Cash Everyday after this year (since I have $0 AF for the BCP this year and the BCE is $0 AF every year). I would be able to afford the $150 AF then for the Green.

My only question, then, would be how it would work when trying to redeem the points. I think the airport I will fly out of is a hub for Southwest, which is not an Amex partner and you cannot book their flights on the Amex portal if I am right. In that case, would it be useful to go with something like Chase instead, since their points transfer to Southwest?

Edit: I can get reimbursed for some (if not all) of my travel each year.

I can get reimbursed for most (if not all) travel. I hadn't considered the USB connect, it sounds like it has a lot of premium perks for no annual fee. I mentioned this in a reply to Dakota, but what are your thoughts on getting more into the Amex ecosystem with mostly flying Southwest (which cannot be booked through any portals and is not a partner with Amex).

I was looking at both cards, and I think Chase transfers better to my airline that is a hub for my eventual airport in Chicago. What are your thoughts on Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Amex Green? Since I already have BCP, I think I can transfer cash back from that card into Amex points, but Amex doesn't have any partnership with Southwest to redeem points (and you can't book Southwest on travel portals).

It looks like my airport has some delta flights, just not non-stop and as many as southwest.

The Green should be no drama for an approval.

Keep in mind though that BCP/BCE are cash back programs while the Green and Gold are on a MR points system. They are seperate programs as noted by @DakotaM .

I'd wait until your FICO scores are > 700 if applying for anything outside of Amex.

@gande96967 wrote:

Thanks, @NoMoreE46. Seems like my two best options are between the Amex Green (to be able to pair with the BCP) or start in with the Chase ecosystem by getting the Sapphire Preferred.

Oh, so I can't convert my cash back into the membership rewards points? Then it might be worth it to have the Chase ecosystem for the travel for now so I can use it with Southwest. Sorry, I am very new to credit cards and trying to do my due diligence!

I have no experience with redeeming points for anything but cash. With usb, you can use points in their travel portal, I just cash them at cents per point.

If looking into a points ecosystem, don't forget venture X, much lower af. Id really be careful not to paint myself into a corner where I can't fly the most convenient airline.

As was already mentioned, if you stick with one hotel brand, you might get their card, they all have one. Example. amex has three hilton cards. These card rewards are in hotel points, good for hotel stays. I got the white card, just for the sub. Right now, this card,

https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/?intlink=us-en-hp-product1-personal-creditcards

Has a 130,000 point sub for $3000 spend in 6 months and no fee the first year.

Another thing, there are no amex mr points cards with no fee, but amex does offer a no fee, no min checking account that does mr points, so, if you get a fee card for the sub points you can park them there if you later cancel the card. They pay a sub to, but they want a large direct deposit to collect it.

If you want to do deposit account subs but don't have the direct deposit, there are ways of simulating DD by depositing from your own account.😁😁

Part of the beauty of getting CSP or Venture is not having to do any transfers.
