Using debit card = credit check.

In tiny print, way, way, WAY down several screens, I found this excerpt from Avis

" If you use a debit card at this location, you won't need to present a second form of identification, but we will perform a credit check at the time of rental to determine credit worthiness."

In other words, pay cash, get credit pulled. Pay with credit, no credit pull.

I have a reason to believe that reports can also be pulled just by using name & address. SSN is not really required.

Also, the car rental companies either make a copy or just ask to see your driver's license, and it always seems that they type everything on it into their system, and driver's licenses often include your Social.

That is true. I went through the process. I thought it was a hard pull though. A tip to them is whichever cc you may use initially, make sure it is the farthest date from reporting to the bureau's. Use that card and when you return the car, then use your debit card. On car rental agencies defense, most have had issues with people that use their debit card not understand the differences in rules. They want to insure that if the car is damaged and you don't take their insurance that you are responsible to be able to repair it one way or another. If your credit score is low, they consider you a risk and deny you. It is the same theory businesses are using in hiring nowadays. "If you can't handle your own money, how can you handle mine?" Not saying it is right all the time, but I get it. I don't like it, but I get it.

They should not be pulling credit they should pulling Chexsystems I guess Dave Ramsey won't be renting any cars from Avis

Right! then there is the locals that rent using debit cards and wreck it and don't have there insurance together. I ran a rental car company for three years. We never ran credit so it doesn't have to happen, but everyone isn't honest. It's always the honest people paying for the dishonest.

Really? Which states do that? I know Texas doesn't.

You mean they connect to DMV system and get your SSN? No way. After 2004, no states issue IDs or DLs with SSN on it anymore and no way they'd share it with a "rental car company".

My first DL had my social on it.. my second may have too. I don't remember. I know it hasn't for the past two times .. not since they put the barcode on the back. Now its just name, dob, exp, height, weight, eye color, class, address and restriction.

I don't know what information the barcode gives people.

VA automatically puts it on the DL unless you specifically ask for an alternative ID number.

As far as I know, all DMV's require your soc card (or proof of soc) and it's included in your DMV record. Anyone (business) who has access to your DL theoretically can gain access to it.
