American Express Gold Preferred Rewards

I recently got approved for a Delta and a Starwood card, but after looking at this card and thinking this is the way to go eventually or can I ask to convert at activation? I am not sure how hard it is to get this card. Current plan is to spend about 1400 a month on the delta and starwood paying each off a the end of the month to get higher cl's faster. Any help would be appreciated.

Those are too low I am sure but now that I look at it I do not want an american express charge card, what's the point? I am probably missing the point though. I am looking to go to an optima platinum now someday over the rainbow, I would like to be able to carry a bit of a balance at least say 10% or less...

Your scores are probably too low for either Gold charge card. Charge cards are to be paid in full every month. You cannot apply for a revolving card and convert it into a charge card. You might want to consider converting your cards into better ones like Blue, Blue Cash or Clear...these cards will allow you to revolve.

Not sure, my kid got a pre=app on that one from being AU on my accounts before I opted him out.

I guess my question ultimately is that yes I understand my scores are low at this point but since I will be pif every month would it make more sense for me to try to get a green in a couple of months with good activity with amex? This way I can eventually end up with the gold, platinum etc? Also does it look better to have a charge with them and on the credit report? Or do revolvings look better? I am just curious, thanks.

If you have Delta and Starwood, why would you want Gold Charge card again to improve your scores?

Of the Delta or the Starwood, I would recommend the Starwood product. All points earned are automatically transferred at cycle cut, and can be redeemed at far greater levels than Delta. Also, since Starwood has so many particiapating partners, you can transfer the points from Starwood to any of their partners, and when you do transfer to many airlines, for every 20k you transfer, Starwood throws in another 5k. It's a much better program.

I agree with fused your scores maybe to low to get the gold rewards plus.

I am curious if a person with the Delta gold can do a product change to clear. I have not heard of this happening yet. I know you can convert to Blue products. I don't think you can product change to Optima Plat credit card.

I think you have a good plan with waiting and using your cards. I did this last year when I first got my Green charge card and Clear... I received those cards in October or Nov 2006.. then in May of 07. I received the Blue and Optima Plat., then this August received the rewards plus gold card.

I never did a product change.

hi, newguy (and other new people here), ragcajun is like the walking consumer survey for Amex. I think she has about every card they have, so she's a great resource for you!

Been there, done that, and probably has the T-shirt franchise by now!

Well I actually did a product convert from Starwood to Blue the 21st!! They gave me a rate of 11.74% and there was no problem at all upgrading the card, so blue here I come. I hope someday after using the green responsibly I can get a gold charge, but we will see. I hope maybe the optima platinum but that is probably waaayyy down the road.

I think fused, notmyname and others are good resources to ask questions about AMEX. I never knew you could do a product change. Heck I might have done that a while ago.

Oh well. My AMEX card is on hold.. I can't use it anymore.. I gotta pay back the money..LOL I just love Black Friday shopping, on line!

Hmmm, now I am dumbfounded I just got approved for the Gold card. Yea my ex is still 622 last time I checked. I know I just was approved to upgrade my Starwood to a Blue a couple of days back and I know I was told I would probably not be approved for the Gold by multiple people but I sure was. maybe somebody I know works at Amex? lol Now that I have this card coming I am thinking it's best to use it and do away with the Green as I get 10,000 points for my first purchase as opposed to 5,000. Oh well needless to say within like two weeks after receiving my cards I already have everything I wanted done with Amex. One great revolving card, Blue and one great charge, Gold...Woo wee!

Man, I had a 717 when I applied for my AMEX green card and I was hesitant. Congrats on the Blue and Gold cards. I hope I will be graduated to Gold soon.

WOW, congrats! that is good news.

The more I think about it, I believe it's easier to get other AMEX cards once you have one of their cards. My hubby got the delta, did a product change then got approved for the one card.

I doubt he would have gotten the card without the delta gold/blue first.

I wonder what your 'pre set spending limit" will be with that score.

I know I am surprised too. I am not sure what my "pre-set spending limit" will be, but as long as I can do about 1000-1100 a month as those are my fixed expenses that I pay for each month. I was shocked as well I looked at the screen about 10 times to make sure and yea even double checked the check application status screen haha. Oh well platinum here I come...when I get a big raise lol.
