Pre-Approved WFNNB... CL?

In your experience what is your starting CL when you get pre-approved for these cards?

I'm helping a friend fix his credit and he was pre-approved for Spiegal (which he will have no use for) and Express... both accounts instantly approved but no CL mentioned on either.

oh believe me, when it comes to helping someone else i penny pinch those apps like crazy, I don't want him to have more than 3 inq on each report... and the goal is 1 good visa, one good amex, and a couple store cards!

On Spiegels, the usual preapproval is about $500. They are generous with CLIs (they raised me to $1100 3 months later)

Pottery Barn (also WFNNB) is also good. I started at $4k, about 4 months later (yesterday) I hit the CLI button and they raised me to $4800. I love Pottery Barn and they have a great bonus program....

My express card has $500 CL... that was in March and my scores were low 600's.

I have been preapproved for Spiegel at $500 but did not bite... Same for Newport News, but did not bite. I didn't want anymore new accounts killing my score.

I have Victoria Secret card; I think it started with $500 limit and I have this card for a long time 5+ years now my CL is $1520.00 and these increases were auto CLI. The good thing about this card you can use this card at Bath and Body.

okay so when you first log in, it asks you if you would like to create an account (e-mail and name maybe is all asked) you do that then it pulls up a screen with choices to the left, like my shipping info or billing info, go to that link and fill in all your shipping info and it might ask last 4 of soc can't remember for sure.

Now go and put 1 thing in your cart, doesn't matter you can back out before you actually buy... but click to check out, it will verify your item, shipping, and address blah blah, then click to complete check out and BAM a screen should pop up that says your pre-approved would you like to except? then it asks for social, dob etc. and you click next and it says your approved, then either back out or continue to next screen to pay for your item in the cart with your new card.

Another thread said that doing this will NOT result in a hard on your reports. I find this hard to believe, but you never know.

If anyone gives this a try, could you please post back when you know for sure whether there was a hard inq or not?

Of course, hard inq or not, it will still show up as a new account, dropping AAoA, as someone pointed out above.

I didn't believe it either, but my friend recently got speigal and Express and upon pulling his reports, they softed him, but no hard... and I'm sorry I forget which report they softed.

I did proceed to the checkout and purchase the items and have only a soft pull on EX. It's not true of all their cards, two others that I applied for outright left hard pulls on EX.

yes if you apply outright it's a hard, but if your offered the card through pre-approval it's soft.

no probably not, I could completely remember if it just asked for address or last 4 of social.

+1 to no inquiry. After learning about the pre-approval at checkout on another board, I decided to try it out. Approved for Express card... $500 - no hard inquiry! BUT, if you apply for a WFNNB card in-store or cold app them, it is indeed a hard inquiry that way.
