So I just got approved for the American Express Gold Card.

Got a pre-approval letter in the mail and just went to apply and got approved instantly. The first year is free and the only reason I went to apply for it was to just get a first account with them and maybe later in 6 - 7 months I will apply for the Blue Cash or Clear since I hear that their credit cards are difficult to get. At least now that I applied the backdating really helps so later on when I apply for the Blue card it won't lower my average age of accounts which would lower my score so that's good. I will just be charging maybe $100 - 200 a month until the 6 month mark. Sound good? >_>

Congratulations on your approval, the gold card is a great card to have. The backdating will not work the way you are thinking it will right now. If you apply for the desired card in six or seven months, the new card will show as opened in October or November 2011. There is no backdating.

The way to take full advantage of the backdating is by waiting another Year from the month approved. If you wait until Jan through April of next year then your new card will be backdated to January 2011 versus January 2012. See the difference?

Wait until Janurary of 2012 to apply. This way, you get it back dated to 01/11 instead of 4/11. 3 months extra in age there.

Oh okay I understand now, so if I apply next January for the credit cards it will only cost me an inquiry right? Thanks a lot guys =D

AMEX backdates the year but not the month.

so if u opened a new card in Jan 2012 AMEX will backdate it to Jan 2011 even your other card is opened April 2011, if u open one in Dec 2011 u get no benefits from backdating. If you apply on next January, it will cost you an additional hard inq but you get 3 more months than opening it today.

why not? nothing to lose.

edit: its one inq for multi application on same day, but I'm not sure if its 24 hours or within same calendar day...i think its 24 hours but might be wrong.

Yeah I still don't know how the hell I got approved with around 680 scores on Transunion and Experian. Thanks a lot guys =D

Congrats. It seems as if AMEX has loosened up a bit the past year. You don't need upper 700's to be a good credit risk.

Yeah it looks like they have for maybe the past 6 months. I have learned that income really doesn't play much of a factor but all they want is a clean report with no problems really. It really depends if somebody at the office is having a bad day if your application needs to be looked over before getting approved. I got approved for a Discover More card two years ago when my credit history was only 7 months old and with an Equifax score of 679 and I wasn't approved instantly.

AMEX like clean report, last year when I applied with a clean but thin CR, 4 or 5 inqs, no idea about the score but should be in high 600s.

Two CC: 2.5yr $800 and 2 month $500, AMEX gave me $2K CL.

Discover shot me down for not enough credit.
