AMEX Question

In 1997 I had an AMEX Ultima CC that defaulted. I recently paid that account off and was approved for the Delta Skymiles =) (EX 633/13 inq's/4 derogs). When I went to setup my online account, I noticed that it says "Member since 1997" on the site.

From reading a few posts here, I get the overall impression that AMEX takes a few months to start reporting to the bureau's...so instead of waiting, I'm wondering if anyone here knows if my new account will have 10 years of credit history on my report? Or will it just be a new account? Thanks.

Consider yourself lucky, Amex is known to blacklist those who default. It may take up to a few months before it reports. I doubt this CC will report the 10 year history you are hoping for.

DW PIF a defaulted AMEX in April, Oasis offer in the mail in May, CC in hand in early June, AMEX Green in hand late June, AMEX Delta in hand early July. They started reporting to all 3 CRAs in fairly short order. DW has member since 2000 on hers.

Friend of mine who works at AMEX told me he knows of cardholders from the early 70s who defaulted, paid, got a CC, defaulted, paid, got a CC, and have "Member since" the 70s.

This is a new CC. You could have had a good TL with them from 1958 to 1997, but you ain't gonna keep that good history on your new CC.

Hi Noah - Your posts are always very helpful. So I just recently paid an old Amex from 1991 (I called them to find out about it as I've never been notified but in my gut I knew it was left unpaid, but it's not on my reports). Long story short, I paid immediately and they told me about Oasis. I'm waiting for the form to sign/return. Once I get my Optima card, is it really possible to get another AMEX? or should I wait 6 months to apply? My report is looking SOO much better and my Fico is 661 and rising. Just wanted to get your opinion on that. Thanks so much!

I paid off my defaulted AMEX from 1997 in June of this year, applied in July for the Delta and received the card about a week later. When I paid it off, I asked the lady when she thought I should be able to get a new AMEX. She said that I should wait a year before applying...I couldn't wait and really didn't have anything to lose so I went for it. Of course, YMMV but good luck =)

Yes, absolutely possible. The day DW got her Optima in the mail, she activated it, registered online to view statements and the account, and she applied for both a Green and a Delta there and then online.
