I have the exact same experience. USAA denied me for a $20K personal loan, but NFCU was happy enough to approve a $20K and $8K Personal unsecured loan! both at 11.96%

I also applied for the Platinum mastercard and nRewards visa that NFCU offered and got approved with a $1,000 limit as well. I love NFCU, they actually call you. USAA has never called me once

I would get the Amex, and just sit on it without spending a penny on it. Are you rebuilding credit?

I did it! Finally got an unsecured CC - Visa rewards. It was the one thing on my credit report besides length of credit history (9.9yr avg) that was holding me back. I applied with both USAA and NFCU after getting my alert from scorewatch - EQ went up to 649! Up 34pts in a week! I LOVE MYFICO!!!!!!! I figured I'd try for an unsecured one and then if I didnt get it I'd get a secured (may still get USAA's secured). So I got approved with NFCU but not USAA .The limit is small - $500 but it's a start. OAN should I go ahead with the USAA AMEX secured? And at what amount - offered up to $5000? I'm thinking $1000 any thoughts?

Yeah I was trying to get a higher score and then trade in my 04 Explorer for a 2011 vehicle but not sure if I should do that yet. I wanted a new vehicle to be my last big purchase for a good while.

I have the USAA secured Amex. I also have a Platinum MC cl 500, a motorcycle loan and a cashrewards visa with NFCU cl 8000.

From what I gathered the USAA secured Amex is a new program. I originally applied for the unsecured and they counter-offered with this. Considering your deposit is placed in a CD (1.2%) I put 2500 in mine. Like I said though, since its a relatively new program not many people have had long experience with this card but im hoping it graduates to unsecured after the 2 year CD is up with good payment history etc.

I hope that it graduates to unsecure also. I think I'm just going to put 1500 on the USAA AMEX secure since I have 500 CL on one card already.
