Nice post!

The extended warranty credit card perk might make it easier to decide to pass up that pricey extended warranty the salesperson tries to sell with new electronics/gadgets/phones/etc., which most likely will be obsolete in two years anyways.

I think I've got to start marking "Warranty X 2" or something on the receipt I keep with the owner's manual/warranty info...just in case.

The extended warranty will be nice. Unfortunately I don't have the CL to purchase an electronic device just yet. Had my card for 2 months now, 10 months to go before I can app for a prime card.

Question about the extended warranty. Does it come on top of the warranty you buy or is it a standalone warranty? For example say you buy an electronic device that comes with a manufacturers 1 year warranty, if you pay with your card you essentially get a 2 year warranty. What if it doesnt come with a warranty? Do you get a year warranty from the card?

I believe it just doubles the manufacturer's warranty, but don't quote me on that.

Extended warranty coverages vary by card. In the case of American Express, it doubles the original manufacturer's warranty up to one additional year on products with a manufacturer's warranty of five years or less. Confused? If the warranty is 1 year or less, it's doubled. If it's 1 to 5 years, then 1 year gets added on. I believe Mastercard works the same way but only on products with a warranty of a year or less. If it's got a 13-month warranty, there is no additional MC warranty. I'm not intimately familiar with MC's warranty coverage, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

What happens in that additional warranty period also varies. AMEX has been known to do everything from credit the account for the purchase price or pay for the repairs. That seems to be the luck of the draw.

Unfortunately, BB&T swears up and down that my BB&T Platinum Visa includes extended warranty benefits, but nobody at BB&T or Visa has been able to tell me how it works. Visa directed me to a web site that allows me to register my purchases, and then tells me that none of them qualify for any warranty coverage. Oh well.

I keep a spreadsheet of purchase dates and warranty dates, as well as scanned copies of the receipts and warranty information. AMEX says to have original receipts available for warranty claims. I've never seen anything to indicate they actually need the physical original receipt as opposed to a scanned copy, but I do keep both. The scanned copy is for convenience, and since modern thermal receipts due tend to fade over time.

I also like the reassurance of the return protection and accidental damage/loss/theft coverage my AMEX includes.
