I reside in NYC, am currently cleaning up my credit (removed some unverifiables, paid off others, added/ing AUs)...

If I want to rebuild with credit-cards, and my Equifax is head and shoulders above TU and EX, which cards would people recommend to apply for?

Also, how are secured cards/bank-loans viewed/scored and what is the best way to go about getting them?

Thanks! So CC's usually pull just one agency and that is dependent on the city being applied in/for? My Ex/TU are not great yet, and I'd hate to have those tank my application...

I didn't even know you could apply for credit-cards from Unions, go figure.

I'm embarrassed to post current scores, it has been a reallllly bad early-mid decade, but am almost done with cleaning and such. Started at;

500/525/627

Within 45 days when the dispute removals, paids, and AUs hit I'm hoping to get to
600/625/720

but that may be very wishful thinking.

In any event, establishing some credit this year is critical. I'll look into those two (and Citibank) when I get my early year scores.

Thanks all.

For Navy FCU and USAA, you need some sort of military connection.

You might want to throw Justice FCU (JFCU) in there, too. It has some huge fans on these forums. If I recall, you have to join the NSA (National Sheriff's Association?) to qualify for membership, but it appears that they will happily take your money, even without a law enforcement tie.

And there's also NASA FCU, which I guess also pulls EQ.

And here's a biggie to add: since opting back in (from the opt-out list), I've been flirting with Bank of America on their on-line preapproval site. I just pulled my full Equifax report, and I see that they are softing me on EQ.

I can't remember if I saw this mentioned, but you can also check whogavemecredit -dot-com. I find it pretty maddening, and they show all the old 2004 results first, but you can get ideas there as well. Here's the link (I'm in Firefox, so you'll need to copy/ paste):

http://whogavemecredit.com/

Before you app a store card, do research first on the bank that underwrites it. There are some horrible banks behind what seem to be great store cards. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't get them, just that you should know who you're dealing with.

I can say that I've not seen neither CITI nor Chase pull EQ here: Chase is EX and CITI TU.
