So, I left the garden last week and applied for Chase Sapphire. I froze my EQ and TU the day before (2 and 9 INQ, respectively). My EX has 18 inquiries (weird distribution, I know), but EX somehow shows no reference to my BK7 in 2004 so it looks better than the others. 41 accounts, 33 open, AAoA 6.5 years. No mortgage accounts but plenty of others. I have wanted a chase card for a while, but the Sapphire (sad as it is) honestly intrigued me for its looks. And I wanted to get in with chase because I know it will grow.

EX (PSECU) FICO score 751. EQ 714, TU 700. Income $50k-100k(ish) with significant student loans and CC debt. Typing on iPhone now so I won't get into details but feel free to ask. This forum has provided so much to me I have no problem sharing anything I can with others in similar positions. I will pay it forward as others (thankfully) have.

Maybe I'll type my full story another time on my real comp, but for now that should be a sufficient start ;-)

So, anyway, I applied for a Chase Sapphire on 12/22. No instant decision. Util (reported ;-) ) around 25-27%. Obviously, very worried about the util and inq, but knew I had a very good AAoA and lots of history so gave it a shot. Been checking obsessively through the automated system for the last week and it just kept telling me they had received my app 12/22 and they would respond by mail in approximately 2 weeks. Very proud of my patience, but had a few beers today and got up the nerve to call.

Called Backdoor recon number and was immediately connected to a very nice English-speaking young woman. Told her I had applied and hadn't heard anything and was wondering if they had some sort of problem with address verification (recently moved from MA to FL). She reviewed app after giving my SSN. Came back and said she had to transfer me to the department handling my app. 3 minutes on hold, she comes back apologizing profusely about the wait, and says she will handle it personally since they ate not available. Says they had some concerns about some authorized user accounts and weren't able to approve without talking to me (glad I called!). Explained that my parents were getting older and I was listed on a couple of significant accounts ($10k-$36.4k CL) in case of emergency, which is true. The age and CL of those accounts (15-30 years) benefit me, but the balances ($15k and $5k) obviously hurt. I pulled up my USAA CCP report and went through each and every account on there to review ownership and reasoning. She reiterated my income I put on my app (thankfully she read it to me, rather than asking, as I didn't remember exactly what I put. I have a base salary but I am contractually obligated to extended work weeks [straight pay for hours over 40]). I confirmed the amount I estimated since I have been on my current job/assignment for less than a year, but I took avg paycheck for last three months and extrapolated.

Asks very nicely to please put me on hold and she will personally evaluate. Comes back 2 minutes later again apologizing for delay. 1 minute later: APPROVED! For $6k. Overly ecstatic for the approval, but disappointed in the credit line. I have NFCU at $19.8k, started at $14k which blew my mind in the first place. I also have PSECU for 20/20, and BoA, penfed, and 360fcu for $10k each.

I asked her about potential CLI (very passively, was just happy to be approved!). She said it was based entirely on DTI with my existing balances and they would reevaluate every 3 months for increases. I'm okay with that. I'm working hard to pay down my balances.

Now, after all that, if you have made it this far.... I am pretty sure I applied for Sapphire Preferred. Nothing ever came up in the conversation about the specific card I app'd fir in the convo and I dropped the ball due to excitement/nervousness/Bud Light and never confirmed. Also forgot to verify the points bonus on the card, and never asked for expedited shipment. So, I am sitting here wondering if I actually got the preferred. My CL is sufficient for Preferred, but I'm really thinking I may have just gotten the regular. I travel enough and run enough $$ through the card to make the AF worthwhile, so I really hope it's the Preferred.

I also REALLY hope they don't soft my other CBRs, and if they do, soft pulls don't show the BK!!!

Man, it's been quite a journey from my 440 scores in 2005. I finally feel like a responsible and somewhat successful adult. I don't have the 800+ scores or the multi-hundred-thousand-dollar income of some people, but I really think I have rounded out a nice portfolio of worthwhile and useful cards. I still can't get an AmEx, but this will certainly suffice for now.

I wish ALL of you the best of luck rebuilding, and I hope I can at least be an example of how a bit of hard work and determination can turn around a situation that. Feels like the end if the world. Good luck everyone, and THANK YOU!!!!

I thought I mentioned in my ridiculously long first post... I was excited/nervous and forgot to confirm on my phone call. When I call the automated number now, it says congrats... Credit access line $6k. 15.24% APR and card is on its way. No mention of sign up bonus, AF, or which card :-(
Simple answer would be to call back and speak to someone but I don't really feel like it ;-)
