Once this is reached, you cannot go any futher.

-After holding the card with excellent payment history and usage for at least 2-3 yrs, they will offer you an upgrade to one of their prime cards, it is your decision wether to take it or not.

The problem hasn't been ASKING for a CLI, they let you call and ask all the time, the problem is GETTING a CLI when you ask!! If they sent me a letter and it said I was denied because of high balances, short credit history, etc, then I would believe them. They send a letter basically saying when you ask we don't comply because they are not granting customer requested increases.... I get that it's their policy, but COME ON! Don't kill the tree for the paper or waste a stamp to send me that!! Just say no on the phone!

But if the rest of the things he said, such as about manual reviews and upgrades after several years (which I can believe since they upped mine from $500->$750 (my one credit step)-> $2250 in just over a year), there is a small grain of hope in all this for me.....

I just got off the phone with capone and they said my card has a limit of 5K (currently at 3K, haven't asked for a cli, worried about the HP). i've had it for a year but only used it 4 different months. they said if i used it regularly for 6-8 months i would qualify for auto increases; furthermore once i reached my 5K limit via cli, they would PC me to a card with the same annual fee (none in my case) but with a higher credit limit ceiling.

is this true in practice or is the "possibility" exactly that: possible but rarely happens.

thanks.

I've used it every single month, often running about $1500/mo through it, never late, and PIF several times a month to stay under the CL. I had one increase in the CS program and have stayed at $750 ever since. My FICO scores have increased significantly since I was first approved for the card, my util on other accounts hovers between 0% - 3%. In short, I should be a prime candidate for an increase.

And so, I've come to terms with the fact that this card is highly unlikely to grow with me, no matter how well I use it. As of this month, it's been bumped out of the #1 spot in my wallet in favor of my Amex.

I was also told that this card cannot be changed to another card and I will have to re-apply.

My only conclusion is that they have many tiers of sub prime cards coded differently.

no, i called the "regular" number i found on the cap1 page (1-800-955-7070).....the person sounded like english wasn't their first language, read me a bunch of canned "thank you" etc......so i imagine a foriegn call center........

but i didn't even press to much, i asked about the maximum credit limit and i think i wasn't clear and she just heard "credit limit" and told me to "stay with her" while she looked and reported that it was 3,000, which i already knew.

then i told her i knew about the tiered system they have and i wanted to know what the maximum CL i could obtain with my current card. she said the one i had was 5,000 (i can't remember if she paused to look it up in my file or if they just know based on the card or if it was already showing). then she mentioned that there were other cards that had maximum credit limits of 30,000. i asked why i wasn't given an auto increase (she actually started by "congratulating" me on my 12 months with them (it was passed, in october), she replied that i haven't been using it enough (i only used i 3 different months).

she said every 6-8 months, if i use the card for purchases, i would get an increase until i hit the limit. she even suggested things like "groceries" and "gas." and then i asked what happens, can i get a card with a higher ceiling for CL? she said they would then change me over to one with a higher one........it seemed very straight forward.

i might be imagining it, but as soon as i started talking about credit limits and product change and such, her tone became very different. she wasn't overly enthusiastic or overly polite.......it became a very matter-of-fact conversation. i'm calling again right now to double check........i'll post again after the call........

i called them back, different answer.........

i used the phone log to use the same number......the csr said that there was no pre-determined maximum credit limit on any of their cards/products......i tried a second time, letting him know i spoke with someone the other day that told me otherwise. he repeated basically the same thing but in fewer words and said he couldn't see any of that kind of information and that the information didn't exist......i then asked for the supervisor since i didn't feel like we were getting anywhere.

the supervisor came on and, to my surprise, reitered the precise question i wanted the answer to: what was the maximum credit limit on my credit card. he said that he needed to switch "systems" (terminal, user interface, not really sure) but it took 2-4 seconds and then he said it was "4,999."

i told him, since there are soooo many products to keep track of, what was the specific product (since i actually didn't have the card on me, i'm not using it because i like my other cards more). he said it was the visa platinum no hassles miles rewards card. he was nice about it and i just told him i knew of others with some problems with their credit limits and getting them to raise it; and that i just wanted to let them know, note down, that i will use it regularly and try to make it my primary card as much as i could with a card that has a 3K limit for the rest of the year.

but, i warned him, that if i wasn't happy with the progress of the credit limits and/or product change possibilities i was going to cancel the card (i guess a bit of unncessary posturing on my part, but true). he was nice and said his bit about how every person is different, can't really promise/guarentee anything, etc, etc.......but he said he could suggest that i call back after four months of usage and see what they could do about apr, transfering balances, and other benefits, not only CLI and/or PC. i told him thanks, but i wasn't interested in anything but CLI/PC so i can start accumulating more rewards while keeping my utilization low and my credit score high. he said he understood and that it would be best to call back at the end of the year (note the change from call back in "four months" to "end of the year").

i asked if he could tell me about the ceiling for venture, he said he could transfer me over to a specialist who deals with only the venture cards. i said thanks but i didn't have time tonight.

all in all, it was a less pleasant and informative call than the night before; i assume the information on both nights are honest and close to the truth (not entirely since tonight the csr tried to tell me that the company didn't pre-set CL ceilings on their cards; but the csr may have been right about not seeing that information, since the supervisor sorta corroborated the csr's story by telling me the he (the supervisor) was switching to another "system" that the csr "didn't" have access to. whether the csr honestly interpreted the "didn't" have acces to this information to mean that the information was "non-existant" or if he blatantly lied to me is difficult to figure out).

i guess this just raises my suspicions about the MO of the company. if i use the card for a year and then call back and cancel. they've already gotten that one full year of fees and such from the merchants (sicne i PIF). it seems they're worried about getting more cardholders rather than keeping existing ones, at least they don't seem concerned with keeping them for long periods of time.......at least that would be my really rough estimate of how they operate from what i've read in the forum.............

I don't either. As far as I know they simply do NOT ever promote a subprime card to a prime card. If you want a prime card you are going to have to apply for that prime card and take the 3 INQ hit.

And I've heard that all of their cards DO have upper limits I mean come on, likely 1% of their customer base at best has ever hit them, but you know they exist.

It's funny how depending on who you talk with there, the day, the phase of the moon, the weather, etc, you get different answers to the same questions. Makes you wonder if you can believe anything you are told by them. So the question is, why would you want to do business with a company like that IF you have other options? If you don't, then just suck it up and stick with them until you can get something better - when you can, dump them like a hot potato.

The ONLY thing and I mean ONLY thing they are good for other than rebuilding, is no foreign transaction fee. That is IT and they are barely worth the hassle to get that.

Just had a nice 15 min. convo with a Sr. Acct. Esc. CSR:

-The No Hassle Cash rewards card for average credit has one step increase and it is manually reviewed by CapOne every 6-12 months thereafter.

-You CAN request CLI's whenever you like. These are SP's. However they do not manually review your request of you are denied, they simply mail you a letter.

- The card has a ceiling of 3K. Once this is reached, you cannot go any futher.

-After holding the card with excellent payment history and usage for at least 2-3 yrs, they will offer you an upgrade to one of their prime cards, it is your decision wether to take it or not.
