@SoulMaster wrote:

+1

You can buy your way into a car loan, with a large enough down payment (and outrageous APR).

But, when it comes to getting a mortgage, you *have* to have credit history.

@Anonymous's actually not true... if you have 3-20% down (depending on your program), you can finance a house @ normal rates w/ a ZERO credit score / history. I, unfortunatley have a BK on my report, which is decidedly NOT a zero, so I have to rebuild to get a home loan. Else, I wouldn't use credit. Ever. (See "Total Money Makeover")

There's nothing wrong w/ using debit to pay for everything. In fact, if you lack the disaprin, it might be the best choice.

Nein, take it from a reformed cash-based existance person: stop using that debit card except in emergencies. Carry a credit card (whichever one you're running your life through currently) and twenty bucks and see how long you can keep that $20 in your pocket for. Two cards if one is an Amex charge card, YMMV.

Sure, you can get various first-time buyer loans with a thin file, but it's a massive hassle (paperwork, paperwork, and more paperwork), but when you want to go buy a car, sigh. Unless you can float the 25k+ for a "nice" new family sedan OTD, go build a credit rating somehow. I was in that position back in 2000 where I just threw cash at an Acura TL, but I'm not there now, not by a long shot.

Sure, I never worried about things, and still really don't: my income today outstrips by spending by several thousand dollars post-tax every month, because I don't have anything expensive in my life, but let's look at where things went wrong:

1) It's harder for me to get a job with crappy credit history. I don't quite know how I got my current one at a financial services firm (auto loans) recognized the world over, but I did. I got flat out denied elsewhere in part by the credit history... and even got letters to that effect afterwards as mandated by Federal law.

2) Auto insurance is more expensive, by like double, maybe triple. Personally I suspect I'd save around $500+ a year on insurance with a good credit history.

3) It's one of the most humiliating things in the world to try to rent a crappy appartment that you could write the rent for 7 years in advance out of your checking account, and have the landlord look at your report, start shaking his (or her in my case) head, mumbling I don't know... regardless of offering to pay a year in advance right then and there, or even offering to go right down the street to get a cashiers check.

Sure owning a home can be done, especially in the current economic environment where government and charitable assistance abound, but there's no guaruntee those are going to be there in even 5 years.

Credit scores, right wrong or indifferent, are going to become increasingly common to judge people by: I say this as a reformed cash (debit) user whose numbers on his debit card are rubbed down to the base - do yourself and any future family you have a favor, and show the bureaucrats what they're looking to see - a good credit score, and it's a path to a lot more income stability and other benefits later. All it takes is a minor change in your habits and acting responsibly with it.

Amex is trying to get people to sign up for thier prepaid cards... It looks like they'll review your account and possible send an offer for a charge card.

The following is from the AMEX Prepaid Site:

HOW IT WORKS

Order an American Express Prepaid Card in your name.

Use it regularly for your everyday needs to create a history with American Express.

Once a good track record is developed, you may be invited to apply for an American Express Charge Card. It's just one more way to work toward financial independence.

I'd say that anyone out there craving an Amex card should sign up for this deal

While its good that AMEX says that, it's not a pre-approval by any means. When you apply for a prepaid card, your credit is not pulled at all.

They will just monitor how you spend with the prepaid but what if you use it well for 1 year and decide you want a charge card? The will still pull your credit. Maybe they will factor your payment history on the prepaid card into their internal scoring model?

I just signed up. I need all the help/pull I can get with Amex. I really want to qualify for one of their charge cards (Zync is my best bet). So basically I will just load what I want to spend for the month onto this card and use it instead of my debit card. Hopefully after 6 months of this, and some work on my credit reports, they will deem me worthy of their cards.

FYI...they do not do a HP or SP (as far as I can tell) and the card in no way affects your credit. They do need your SS # though, which is probably how they end up tracking you for offers.

I'm sure it is factored in somehow. If you are re-loading money on the card each month and using it for everyday purchases, that's a pretty good indicator of your ability to handle a charge card and will probably help determine the invisible spending limit they will put on it. Notice how they say that it helps with getting their charge cards, not their credit cards.

Oh, of course. I'm sure people with the card are no better off than people without it after they do a HP. Maybe if you are denied for charge card but have excellent spending habits with their prepaid card, you can use it as part of your argument during a Recon. Who knows!?

I just need a card to use outside of my debit card to manage my spending. So if this also helps with that AND possibly helps with getting a charge card later on down the road, (which i'm sure other prepaid cards don't) then i'm definitely on board.

Good info! Thanks for that. I guess maybe all it means is that you're more likely to get "pre-approved". I wonder if it will factor into their decision. It doesn't explicitly say that.

I don't know about that... it pretty specifically states "Please note, an application for the Charge Card does not guarantee approval."

This could just be a marketing ploy...

Sigh. Charge card aimed at subprime that doesn't report to the bureaus.

Maybe if they backdate to this card (no guaruntee of that), then perhaps it makes sense to run something through it... but if it's not helping us rebuild credit in any shape, form, or fashion by it's use either now or in the future, no thanks. A Zync is likely to become more obtainable as time goes on for all of us who are rebuilding, and I suspect Amex will start lowering their credit requirements anyway on their low-end charge cards.

I'm not sure of all the particulars...but I applied for a Zync in January of 2011 and was denied, I got the prepaid card as soon as they were offered and then haphazardly applied for a Plat to get my FICO score in July. They approved me for the Platinum with a few ugly things on my EXP report.

So it may have been a case of wanting my $495 annual fee or it could be that I ran about $2500 through the prepaid card pretending I had an AMEX. Either way, I have one now...I'm sure if you're reports are totally nasty looking then it's a no go either way. I just thought it was interesting and may help some of you.
