I have the Capital One Reward CC, which currently has a $500 limit (I have another Cap 1 that is 5 years old with a $1,000 CL). Anyway, the rewards CC is about to turn 6 months old and I would like to see if I could get a bump in the CL. I truly want to use it for most of my purchases without having to pay it off on a weekly basis.

Anyway, what is the best way of going about this? I have been reading on the forums and know that they will not combine the accounts (correct me if I am wrong). Also, I have been reading a lot about the credit steps program that they offer. I have no idea if I am in it or not, so I am not sure if this even deals with me. From posts though I think that I will get an automatic CL bump after 6 months if I am in the credit steps program (please let me know if I am wrong).

So, I guess I am trying to ask what to do to get a CL. Should I call them as soon as my 6 month anniversary hits in 2 days or should I just play a waiting game?

Thank you for your help.

honestly you need to just settle on the fact that you'll never get a customer initiated CLI with cap1 (very rare) best bet is being in the credit steps program which will usually give you 2 CLI's usually to 750 then beyond.

i'd call now and see if you're eligible for the 6th month automatic CLI

They have different credit steps programs, so you'd need to call to find out if you are in it, and if so, when you can expect your CLI. Usually from 500 they go to 750. Sometimes there's a second step to 1000, it depends. Beyond whatever your steps are, I wouldn't expect the CL to go higher than that unless you're blessed by the cap one fairies.

To be honest, do not even waste the 10 minutes of your life on the phone with Crap1, all you're going to get is the same canned response that the other 1,237,366 members here have gotten, unless you are the one of the 345,213,098 Crap1 cardholders that actually get a CLI.

With that said, I do Wish you the Best of Luck.

OK, I called Cap 1 and they said I was in the credit steps program. They said on my 7th billing statement that there would be a "courtesy" increase to $750. After that I would have to wait 6 or 7 more months and then call in to see if they can increase it. I guess a little is more than none.

Also, I checked to see if my other Cap 1's CLI could be increased finally after 5 years, and I got the "no" answer. I guess it cost me an inquiry, but I wanted to see where I stood with them.

^ Cap One pulls softs for CLIs, so you should be okay inquiry-wise.

Ever. If they don't do a CLI after 5 years of perfect use, you have to ask yourself exactly what sort of thing would result in a CLI....or what length of time. And then ask yourself if you'll be around for the next ice age to see it.

And once your "credit steps" is done, which I've been told is basically one for sure increase (assuming perfect use) and then maybe more after that (don't hold your breath being the key here). It sounds like they'll do a hard pull to decline you, is it really worth dealing with them? I guess that is up to you.

I've gotten 2 CLIs from Capital One, although I must admit that they were years ago. I berated them on the phone and threatened to close my card with them. My CL went from $500 to $1K to $2500. It's worth a try, especially if you're using the card a lot.

I told them I was going to close my card because it could never grow with me and I got nowhere with that so I closed it, I didn't think to try berating them, I dunno maybe that did the trick. I felt like it though.

Waaaaay back in the day (my college days, to be exact) I was a CSR. It wasn't a whole lot of fun, but I tried to help callers.

If anyone had called and "berated" me over things over which I had no control, I would have been pretty peeved. More than that, actually, but that's the word that I can use here on the forums.

Enough with the berating bit. CSR's don't deserve being screamed at on the phone. This includes Cap One CSR's.

If you want to escalate in a business-like manner to a supe in hopes of finding someone who can actually help you, feel free to post here how it went. "Business-like" is the operative term here, not berating someone making (maybe) 10 bucks an hour.

Dud cards are dud cards.

I'm objecting to this bit about berating people who are stuck in a mostly-crappy job, but who are trying to pay their bills and keep afloat, just like the rest of us.
