I know how frustrating it is when you have a CA due to drop off. I was advised here NOT to app for credit until after my one CA came off. I was impatient and did do some apping -- cautiously. Now, I'm kind of wishing I had waited because when the CA came off this month, my TU FICO went up a lot. EQ FICO didn't budge much. In any case, I'm thinking that the credit I did get would have had higher CLs w/o the CA. Now, if I want a CLI, I have to get a 2nd HP.

So, the gist is that it really is better (if you can be patient) to wait for the CA to come off. Amex is very picky. With a short history and a CA, I don't think you're going to be approved. BTW, their pre-approval site doesn't really mean much -- which is obvious by your denial. I'd wait for the CA to come off to app w/them.

In 4 mos., you can get CLI w/Walmart and Amazon -- either w/onlline link or by calling their 800# -- so that will help your credit as well. And when your NFCU is a year old, I think you can ask them to unsecure it (which is a HP, BTW). I've never heard of it "expiring," though others here may know more about their secured card.

At least you got Walmart & Amazon! I LOVE getting my TU FICO every month for FREE!!

BTW, there have been recent posts here about Amex's pre-paid card. You might want to check that out. They will sometimes offer a CC to ppd customers after they've established a history w/them.

I got a Pre selected offer from AMEX for their green card. Saw here many were getting accepted with lower scores, My TU was 679, Equifax 649, and from denial letter in amex Experian was 659.

I checked special offers on amex site, said I was pre selected for green, gold, and zinc. I knew zinc was easiest so I gave it a shot but I probably should of waited longer. I have 1 collection from 6 + years ago due to fall off this nov from cell phone.

I have NFCU secured card with 8 months history, a Orchard bank with 3 months, and two car loans paid off.

I was really hoping I would get accepted, they listed reasons I was denied as

Your FICO? score (See below)

Too few established accounts or insufficient account information (Experian)

Length of time accounts have been established (Experian)

Delinquency reported on accounts (Experian)

Felt depressed so decided to get a walmart card for the free TU08 Fico Score. I got approved for $500 for that. I also shop at amazon a lot and a prime member so I applied there and got $600 for that both instant approvals. Walmart said it would give $20 gift card if u spent $100 day u get approved, and amazon gave me $10 credit. I spent $100 on walmart so we will see.

Any chance I should try to recon amex or just wait till november? My inquries probably took a hit, and my NFCU secured card expires in may, so I may need to reapply for that again. Any chance I will be approved for their unsecured card?

My overall utili is low $6-$40 a month in gas/web site bill. NFCU is $500 and orchard is $300.

I hope amex reconsiders in the future, I love this site it has helped me so much with my credit!

I'm guessing the delinquency is what put you over the edge. They might be willing to overlook a short history otherwise. You could try to write a GW letter to get rid of the collection, but at this point it might restart the SOL.. so maybe it's better to just wait until it drops off. Once it's gone you'll probably have better luck, especially if the NFCU card has reported for 12+ months at that point.
