I just got my Capital One card delivered but I found someting strange.

I applied a Capital One for New Comer and got approved on line.

After I got my card, it's printed Capital One Platinum Master.

Then I went to my online account it's also the same, Cap1 Plantinum Master.

The difference between two card is only the plantinum one has annual fee after the first year however in the evenlope it says no annual fee, just like for new comer.

Did Cap1 make some mistake or these two cards are basically the same?

I think they put that on all their cards or most of them. I have the student journey and it says platinum on it and online. It's just what they put on their cards to make you feel more important I guess.

A bunch of their cards just show up as platinum. My Platinum card (unsecured) and closed secured card both just showed up as 'Platinum'.

Best way to find out is to call them and talk to an account specialist, that's how I found out I, somehow, have an actual Platinum card with no AF, although they couldn't explain why/how.

How are you doing today? Me: Great thanks. I have a question about my card. I believe I got a no annual fee prime card the green cash rewards, but you invoiced me on my statement for a 39 dollar annual fee. Is my card a no annual fee card as I understood it to be?

CSR: Well you see sir, we cannot conclusively tell you if it does or does not have an annual fee. Capital One is a diverse and conservative credit card company with 12 million subscribers and we offer a wide array of products and services to meet the credit needs of such a diverse group. So we have some cards which do have an annual fee, which can vary depending on which card you have as well as your own creditworthiness. We also have card which do not carry an annual fee and so for this type of card you do not a set amount each year. So you have these kinds of cards and we factor in your personal credit which means that I cannot give you a set answer to your question because it will vary based on your own individual criteria. Does this answer your question?

Me: No, I'm more confused now than when we started. Are you telling me that you can't tell me whether my card has an annual fee?

CSR: Well sir let me see if I understand your question here. Capital One is a conservative lender which means we limit the risks to our shareholders by being conservative about giving credit limit increases. At this time we are not accepting customer iniated credit limit increases. However we review each account on a semi-annual basis for eligibility for credit limit increases and if we determine that you are eligible, you will then see that your credit limit has icnreased on your statement.

Me: No no no I'm not asking for a credit limit increase! I simply want to know whether my card has an annual fee because I believe it has no annual fee and you billed me for one!

CSR: Ok sir let me explain. On a monthly basis Capital One which is a conservative lender will send you a statement listing your charges, payments and any other information about your account which is called your 'bill'. It is mailed to your house or your email address depending on if you have signed up for paperless statements. There is a 25 day grace period by Federal law to pay the amount due without incurring interest charges, if you pay the balance in full. If you do not pay the balance in full then we charge you interest which you will see on your next statement we send you. Does this answer your question about your billing statement sir?

Me: (realizing reasoning is futile and completely worn down to the point of not caring): Have a great day! (click)

You might find this funny but it is honestly almost what I've personally experienced!

Wow ... I can't even fathom how someone can put up with that. Sounds
like he kept reading off a script regardless of what you said to him.

I had got them at the end of 2010 to "fatten" my profile. I knew they had an
annual fee. Hardly ever used it and never called in for anything. I just remember
them sending me a letter about my cli due to credit steps and me not
caring. I guess my point is never saw cap one as somebody to grow with.

Squeezing AF's out of accounts that aren't supposed to have AF's is a no no.
Telling someone we don't know if you have an AF because we have many accounts
some with some without basically saying well too many to keep track of
is even more of a no no.

+1

I have the same newcomers card as you. It actually is a 'platinum mastercard' so that is what it is listed as on your account page. It does not have an annual fee now or in the future. They cannot just start charging you an annual fee because there was no stated annual fee to begin with. I just used this card to get to six months history and then bailed on Cap One for AMEX Green.

It actually is a 'platinum mastercard' so that is what it is listed as on your account page. It does not have an annual fee now or in the future. They cannot just start charging you an annual fee because there was no stated annual fee to begin with. I just used this card to get to six months history and then bailed on Cap One for AMEX Green.

ok thank you for sharing...anyhow I don't really want to talk to Cap1 which makes me sound stupid...

I experienced the same thing, encouraged by you, may I share it here:

Me: I applied for a newcomer card but got a platinum card, can you kindly check is there any mistake?

CSR: thank you for calling and yes you have one card and it's a platinum card.

Me: no, I meant that what I applied for is a newcomer card but what I got is a platinum card.

CSR: ok, let me check.....hmmm you have only one card existing, you don't have the second card.

Me: (frustrated ) ok, let me rephrase my question, does my card have an AF from the second year?

CSR: well I can only see your card has no AF this year, at least not shown on my screen. I can't tell the next year. There may be an AF depending on individual situation.

Me: well what I applied for is without AF and what Cap1 gave me, the platinum, has one, so I don't want to be charged for AF next year? Did you get me?

CSR: I'm trying to. Terms are different for different applicant, so it's possible that your card has no AF at all.

Me: (collapsed) can you pull out my application and check what I applied?

CSR: can you provide your SSN?

Me: XXXX

CSR: sorry that I can't access the application after the card is shipped

Me: then is there a difference between newcomer and platinum? Do you know you have them two?

CSR: you can't apply a new card till several months as you just got approved for one.

Me: !!!! what does it mean then finally?

CSR: your card has no AF this year and may have next year but Cap1 may offer some courtesy to waiver that. you can call back, hmmmmm, Oct, 2012 to see whether you will have AF.

Me: (finally I realized that mission impossible) ok and byebye.

Yes my English is not good and his is not all of the conversation and I may not express my question clearly enough

but basically I felt really tired ( like just came back from gym) and exhausted.
