I would personally not apply for the BCE. Of course AMEX treats everyone's credit reports differently but I was declined for this card with no baddies at the time a 709(per their letter on EQ) excellent history <30% UTL and good income. Their revolvers are more difficult to get as I applied for the Zync the same day (only had one HP for both cards) and was approved for that one. I figured I would use it (and I do ALOT) and after some heavy gardening and after a few Inquiries drop off, I'll apply for the BCE since that is the card I desire.

Good luck either way, but I would do the charge card variety first to get my foot in the door with AMEX. Still no guarantee that you will get approved for charge cards since AMEX is quirky however there have been many on this forum with a lower score and a few baddies get approved. YMMV

I agree that you would have a better chance applying for a charge card, like ZYNC, to get your foot in the door, then you can work towards a revolver card.

I would hold off on applying for any of their revolvers. Maybe try Zync or another charge card. I had to really fight for my BCE and thats with perfect history and 9months of having a green card.

It's possible. If you are concerned that much about the inquiery I wouldn't though, the chances are certainly more on decline than approval. However I was approved with two unpaid collections, one of which was north of $2k. I had a solid FICO at 715 and didn't care about the inquiry, I wanted the card bad so it was worth a shot to me. If it's worth wasting an inquiry go for it, it worked for me but I would say your chances of decline are high. I would suggest trying for a zync and then BCE in 6 months or a year.

thanks, all, for the helpful info

I'm going to be an AU on my mom's AmEx Gold card. Then six months down the road apply simultaneously for Zync (which I don't care about in the slightest) and BCP (which I want). By then my FICO may be well above 700; I know that one C/O will fall off by then too.

Does AmEx ask for income? I actually have relatively good cash flow these days. I just hit a rough patch around 2008 that led to delinquencies and collections.

I would go on their site and see if you are preapproved for anything. When I say that I was for their Gold Charge Card I got it, then after almost a year of use I applied for and received their Delta SkyMiles card, which was the one I really wanted. They had a year history on me, so I think that made the deal, although with only a $2K CL. 61 days later it was $6K and six months after that $18K.

Their charge cards are easier to get, and once they find out you're responsible they are more likely to approve you for a revolver. The have been great to me - very easy to grow with.

okay, so my plan is to apply in September 2012 -- six months from now -- for Blue Cash Preferred. I'm guessing that my FICO may then be around 720. I have a couple of collections (dating to 2009, both paid) and some student loan delinquencies dating also to 2009.

Perhaps I'll get accepted. Perhaps I'll get dinged.

If dinged, would six months later be too soon to reapply?

I may be overthinking this, but the BCP is perfect for me. Were I to get it, I would be in garden mode for years if not a full decade.
