If they involve soft pulls, then yes, absolutely. So long as you don't rack up any inqs, then grow those cards!

I'm sure that requesting a CLI would still fit the quidelines of gardening. You just don't want any new credit in the garden.

ok so heres my cards let me know yes or no for CLl's during gardening:

Chase slate

walmart(GE)

kohls(cap1)

cap1 no hassle

cap1 plat

Home depot(citi)

Jared(in house)

AMEX(NPSL)

BBY store card(will never get a CLI)

i am going to gardening for a year now i just need to be patient and learn from my mistakes and not make them again.... hopefully in a year i can replace 4 of those cards with some good prime cards like BCP and CSP....

Exactly. You're "growing" what you already have. That includes both age of accounts and credit limits.

Since Walmart is GE, that should be a soft pull -- go for it. Cap 1 is a no starter -- they won't consider customer initiated CLIs. If you get one, it will be when they decide to do so, if ever.

I'm sure that someone knowledgable can comment on the other cards.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was referring to the Cap1 No Hassle and the Plat. I don't have a Kohl's, so I have no experience with that card. Nice to know that they gave you one on it.

This may be explained in another thread, but why do you think your BB store card will not grow? AFAIK the Plan B cards that don't grow have a max limit of $800. Yours is at $1000, so it would appear to be Plan A.

That would be taking a break from applying for new cards and letting the accounts you have age and gain some history. You can also obtain CLIs during this gardening stage so long as you don't incur HPs.

i dont think HP cli's count. i think its part of gardening. most banks dont do a CLI with out a HP AFAIK... chase, cap1, my hd card(citi) all do HP's for CLI's and dont do auto CLI's. my walmart is a SP

i was told it was a plan b card and will never grow maybe i need to call and ask about it

The point of gardening, if I understand it correctly, is that you're recognizing that you'd be wasting inquiries given the current state of your credit portfolio. If you don't think you can get any new cards, I don't see why you'd think people would want to extend you more credit on the cards you do have.

My plan B was 500.00 closed it and happy I did.

Oftentimes a person will be approved with a relatively small limit, with the lender wanting to see how s/he will do with the account before offering more. If the cardholder treats the account well, the lender will gain confidence and allow/offer a CLI.

This is frequently true if someone has a thin or otherwise "iffy" file. My DH has a thin file and has just started to get cards in his name. He was approved last April for Lowe's, but they started him with a $300 CL. The payment history on the card, and on the others he acquired, has been flawless, and his reported util has been low. After four months, they bumped him up to $600; four months later, he went to $4600. He's also received CLIs on two of his other cards. So, he's been gradually developing a good track record on his accounts and as a result his current lenders are trusting him with higher CLs.
