How does Joint Credit application work? I recently applied for AMEX and got denied (probably my low credit score, mid 600s). My wife and I are trying to open up a joint credit card account with cahse, most likely chase freedom. Wife has credit score above 720. and here's my questions.

Will they consider my low credit score to deny both of us? Or are they gonna say we approve her, but you can't have an account with us. How does that work?

Many credit cards can't apply initially as a joint, most have to be opened and then you call in and request to add a joint applicant.. they will send out a paper form that original person fills out, adds your info and you both sign. Almost never is a HP done to add the joint person. but later if you want off joint, the account will have to be closed... most banks won't remove a joint person (Chase does but you both will get credit pulls and if the worse is declined and they are the one that wanted it, they will just leave it joint but if something else has changed and they don't like either of you anymore they will close it on the spot and will not re-open for anyone.

USBank, PNC, Nordstrom can be applied for as joint but I really suggest not, if your credit is bad you could get the app declined or get lower CL vs. if it's open your credit will never effect that account unless you bk.

After the fact of approve to add joint the following are who will off the top of my head:

GE

Saks - HSBC

Neiman Marcus - HSBC

Chase

USBank

Nordstrom

PNC

Toyota Visa

American Express does not do joint but auth will still get on your report and will allow you to backdate later.

It really depends on which state you live in. Some states have rules for married couples applying for credit.

In some states, your spouse must sign. In others, it doesn't matter.

As was stated by previous posters, banks have "streamlined" their application process to only approve one person.

Just have her add you as an authorized user. Why go joint? If you ever divorce, then you are liable for the debt.

It's generally best if couples have their own credit and are responsible for their own credit. Saves alot of arguing over money later
