Strange cap 1 experience

For some reason tonight I decided to have a conversation with the fantastic csr's at cap one. Initially I just asked for a cli. When I was of course told no I asked why after 5 years of perfect payment history I've never received an increase. Her response was that I hadn't met the requirements for the credit steps program that i was enrolled in. She said that I needed to make 3 on time, paid in full payments to qualify... Needless to say I was angered. I haven't carried a balance on that card in years and always pay in full monthly. She said that they received my last payment but I needed to make two more to qualify. Is this normally how it works? Maybe she just enrolled me now? My limit is 1000 dollars. The same it's been since 2007. Does this mean if I continue business as usual I will get the mythical cap one cli?

Wow........dont know how to comment on that one other than the CSR had no idea what he/she was talking about!

Personally, I'd consider looking at another card (for me, it was a Chase Freedom), specifically so that in a few years, you're not still looking at a 1-2k limit on your main card. I never took Cap1 cards to be long-term cards, but I keep them open anyway.

I assume with 5 years of good payment history, your scores are doing ok?

When you log in online, go to the 'statements and documents' section and look for your credit steps letter. What does the letter say?

I think you need to call and talk with someone in the retention dept. I think you got a "Peggy" who didn't know what she was talking about. The "steps" are when you first get your card; not 5 years later! That said, don't expect any CLI from them... ever... especially if it is a "steps" card.

@cassembler I do have multiple prime cards, at this point it's just the principle. /

@Wolf3 from 2007-2010 I used it regularly, but for the last two years it's sat in my sd. I've only used it once monthly then pif as soon as it posts.

@justme77 When I log in there are only 4 documents listed. All cli requests for the past two years I think.

@bichonmom I think you're right but I was confused because I thought u needed to sign up for the steps program... At least that's what another"Peggy" told me.

the wife and I both have Cap1's.

We both have paid in full every month we've used them for a few years now.

My limit, without asking, was increased from $500 to $4500 a couple years ago. Not sure why.

The wifes, however, has been stuck at $1250 since she got it..well before I got mine.

Ive had previous bad credit while shes never had even questionable credit.

I am completely and utterly confused by Capitol Ones thought processes.

The only logical summation for anything that comes out of Capital One's mouth is as such: they played rescue and were their when no one else was - we will do what they say like obedient little lapdogs until such a time they decide to either give us a treat or release us from captivity.

And I definitely wouldn't suggest talking to retention; this will merely make them laugh and close your card out. Makes you wonder 'who' the retention department was actually designed to retain..

I suggest use it a bunch for 3 months and PIF. Then try again. Still no, might be time to close it.

If the choice is to pull out my cap one platinum or my chase sapphire preferred.. Well...

I think it's just time to put it away and forget I have it. :-)
