I'm currently 25 years old, and do not have a credit card in my name except for a Guitar Center CC, and a Macy's CC (both at 0 balance). I also have two credit cards under my brother as an authorized user. I've tried applying to Capital One's Cash Rewards card, and the Citi forward card for college students. I got denied both times. I don't know what caused my application to get denied. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to credit/credit reports, so I was hoping someone here could help me figure this out. I know that Citi looked at my Equifax, and I just got my free Equifax report for being denied. If you guys need any more information feel free to ask. Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys for such quick responses. The email I received from Citi stated, "Thank you for applying fo rthe Citi Forward(R) Visa(R) account. Unfortunately, we are unable to approve your request for the account at this time because of the following: A delinquent credit obligation(s), either paid or unpaid, was recorded on your credit bureau report." I don't know what that means.

My brother's accounts do carry a balance, quite a heavy one that I know of. I don't even know why or how I became an authorized user. I haven't even SEEN my own card. My credit history started 6 years and 2 months ago.

Would closing my Macy's and Guitar Center cards be a smart choice? Or taking my name off the "authorized user" list for both cards? I'm very frustrated as it feels I haven't done anything wrong, but am being punished for it lol.

quick edit:

My equifax report says I have no negative accounts on file.

Oh also the last time I checked my credit was in June of 2011 for a auto loan. It was in the mid/upper 600s if that helps.

I just got off the phone with the collections department about the $100 dollars. It is now paid off, and they said they would report it to the credit bureaus within 38-72 hours. So that is it for the negative parts on my report. My brother's first card is an AMEX card, and it has been open since 1/2006. The credit limit shows at $7,200, but the balance is $7,273. His other card is a Discover card, and it's been open since 2/2008. The credit limit is $8,500, but the balance area is blank. Should I still stay under him as an authorized user? If you need any other information feel free to ask!

Since I paid off what was on collections, and if I take my name out from my brother's Amex, is it possible to call Citi back with my updates and ask them to re-evaluate? I've heard some people call backdoor numbers and get re-approved this way.

Having the collection paid will not help you. You needed to do a "Pay for Delete". What you can do now is a GW (goodwill letter) asking them to delete the collection from all three CRB's. Look over at the Rebuilding Credit forum for more help with these.

@Elementz Drop the AU accounts! Also paying that CA will do no good FICO scoring wis because a collection hurts the same paid or unpaid. It wuld have been better to negotiate a PFD.

I had no idea a paid collections was just as bad. I didn't even know know what a PFD or GW letter was. I'm on the phone with the collections department's supervisor right now trying to get it deleted.

Your at the mercy of the CA. For future reference, any CA activity on your reports should be handled in writing and not over the phone.

Hopefully they will work with you, who is the CA?

The CA is CPA (Credit Protection Association). I spoke with one of the supervisors, and she was really nice. She told me to call direcpath (the cable company that I owed money to), and get them to authorize my collection to be deleted because it is their decision whether or not to delete the collection. So then I called Direcpath, and they couldn't find my account because it's been close for so long. The person told me she would call me back in an hour. When she called me back, she told me she talked to one of her supervisors, and he already sent an email to CPA to delete my collection. She also told me I would get a phone verification of all this in 24-48 hours. Hopefully I can get all of this resolved soon! I'll keep you guys posted
