I need help. I just discovered that I was charged an annual fee on one of my credit cards 3 months ago and didn't notice. This is a BoA card which is paid off so I wasn't looking for a statement. These guys must send me 10 letters a month with credit offers or cash advance checks and they all look the same as the monthly statements, which I tend to shred without opening. With past due fees and interest, I now owe over $88. The money isn't as important as protecting my credit rating. What would be my best course of action? My impulse is to call and ask to have the charges removed and the annual fee eliminated on threat of cancelling my account (which I will most definitely follow through on). Anything else I should say or do?

Call BOA and talk to them. If you explain they will remove all the charges and negative information. They seem to be pretty good with the customers. Also you should occassionally check your accounts just to make sure there is no fradulent charges on the card. Good Luck and I am pretty sure, BOA will listen your request and remove the charges from you CR.

Hi, flex, welcome to the forums! Hope you can get them to work with you. The main thing to concentrate on is to keep them from reporting this as late payments to the credit bureaus. If you have to grit you teeth and pay the fees in exchange, it would be worth it in my opinion.

I opened an account at check-out at Sears (d'oh!) last December and waited for Sears statements to arrive. I shredded MasterCard mail from Citi for two months before I figured out that the card was actually a Sears MC and these were my statements. When the thirty-day late posted in March, it was an immediate 50-point score drop on EQ.

FWIW, I now only rely on the online versions of my accounts, and I check them daily. Once burned, forever shy! Good luck.
