I just added my little brother to mine. The reason they ask that stuff is because they do not allow people who have defaulted on American Express in the past to be additional card members. It also makes it easier to report to the bureaus if they have the social security number and birth date. No credit check is done.

So the DGF just added me as an AU to a GE Belk dept store card (3 years old, perfect Pmt Hx) and her Chase Amazon Visa (2 months old). She then contacted Amex(confirmed no 30day lates (5 years old) to add me as an AU to that card, and they wanted all of my personal info such as BD and SSN. She handed me the phone to give the information to the rep, and I asked if this was going to result in a HP or SP. She didn't know. Said she just sends the request on to "New Accounts" and they process the request.

Anyone here familiar with the Amex AU process and can provide me with some insight?

I do not believe their will be a hard pull. However, Amex has been known to do a FR (Finanacial Review) when they feel it's needed. It may be why they are asking for those additional info.

I feel I should chime in. I just put my mom on as my AU and they ask for the SSN and birthday to--as another person mentioned--check to make sure your AU hasn't had bad history with AMEX. It doesn't necessarily trigger an FR and it's a SP on their CR. Jennifer from Salt Lake City was a very helpful CSR. My mom's card should arrive any day now, but they usually advise that it takes 10-15 days to process/mail.

Also, if the AU already has an AMEX and you are adding them to your card, they cannot backdate their other cards to your member since date. So my mom opened a Macy's AMEX back in 2010, but only her Costco TE as an AU with me will show the member date from 1999. Of course, YMMV.

DGF contacted Amex "New Accounts" and they advised no SP or HP is involved. DOB and SSN required as they WILL attempt to contact AU for payment, if primary defaults.

DGF has clean pmt hx w/ AMEX and as far as the dinner, I'm PIF her acct, so that I can use it exclusively. Her Old Navy visa (NOT going to be an AU on this card) just gave her another auto-cli to 4k, so she's going to use that, while I rack up miles and keep my util% under 9.

Thanks for all the replies guys/gals
