As someone who just opened my first Chase account 2 months ago this thread definitely got my attention.

So the reason your account was closed was a payment that didn't go through? Was that the only reason?

I am sitting on 30% util on both my Chase and discover cards right now, and since both are a few months old, opened in january and february, I have been stressing a little about AA on my new accounts due to high util. Although I would hope most lenders wouldnt freak out over 30% util. I did change my due date from the first of the month to the 16th of the month, just because I like my statement to cut at about the 3rd week of the month, then PIF on the last day of the month. Hope changing a due date doesn't freak them out either.

I hope things work out for you and you have some great cards if Chase doesn't want your business over a typo.

I hope things work out too! I paid the auto loan off from the same checking account, without making a typo Too bad they don't have a centralized place for me to put all of my external accounts where I can just go in there and select the pay from account which would be universal across auto /CC /Student Loans... If they had this then the typo wouldn't have happened, since I had just entered all of the bank account info correctly the day before

Wow. I've always held onto my BOFA account and touted that it's web interface is second to none, but this is so eggregiously lackluster that I suppose Chase isn't a reasonable successor for any local banking things I actually need. I'll put up with some annoyance for extra convenience factor, especially when it comes to this sort of thing where even simple mistakes can be completely aggravating.

So, I'm at the store, and my card gets declined, which I thought was real odd since I had just paid my statement balance which was due on 4/5/12. So after I leave the store, I call customer service, and I found out that my account was closed... Wow.

I had just paid off my Chase Auto loan one year early which was for 36 months... I've had Chase Student Loans since 2007. I had a Chase Freedom in 2008... I've had about 4 other Chase auto loans in my lifetime. Chase really made me aggravated by closing my account.

I did refinance my truck through NFCU, and the new account is posting without the old account showing as closed. Would that have done it? My Discover also posted a large balance since I just bought a cruise with it. The statement balance was 3k, and I paid it down to $1200 already, which brings my discover balance to $1200. My Discover account is on a 6 month 2.9% APR promotion right now which I was offered in January. When I refinanced the truck, NFCU offered me their Visa, so I'm glad I took since obviously chase doesn't want my business anymore. The amount that I charged in the first Chase statement cycle was $1425, which I attempted to pay in full on 3/30 but the payment didn't go through due to a typo in entering my bank account info. So I noticed the payment didn't go through, and I checked on it on the 5th, and re-typed the info, and it went through with no issues.

Anyways, if Chase wants to close the account that's fine, but why give me an account if you don't want me using it? Anyways I'm getting married in May, and the charges on my Chase card were for the wedding. Our family income is around 180k annually, and I just received my bonus in the amount of 16k, so its not like i'm charging things that we can't afford to pay cash for. My amex statement closed on the 6th so I paid in Full on the 7th in the amount of $2953...

For those of you who are wondering, I put a lot of business expenses through my CC accounts (travel, supplies, etc.) which are reimbursed. I just bought a house, so I've been running things through the cards for the house as well.

Anyways Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations, if Chase doesn't want me, its their loss, Amex is more than happy to benefit from my transaction fees!

Update! My account has been restored, the customer service rep asked my income when I called at 9 am this morning... thanks everyone for the suggestions and support.... Love this forum!

Lessons Learned:

1. Always push payments first to make sure they go through.

2. Double Check your account info you enter when paying a bill, especially if this is the first time you're using the account to pay that bill.

3. If a payment doesn't show up in your checking account, double check to see that it was made properly!! If I hadn't done this I would have had to pay late payment fees.

4. Always pay your bills on time and pay more than the minimum due... I think if i had made only the minimum, instead of the entire statement balance I would have had less of a positive standing in their eyes.

I'm really becoming disillusioned with Chase.

Was a CSR able to give you a reasonable answer why?

I would definitely call the backdoor and figure out what happened. Something just doesn't seem right. Was the payment late on a new account or something? Could there be a fraud issue?

Its just that my earlier payment on 3/30 didn't go through properly because of a typo. I typically pay bills about a week or two before they are due. For example, discover is due on 4/21, and it was paid way early.

It may be triggered for fraud, because I am traveling this weekend. I did open up Amex and Chase in the same month... Maybe chase doesn't like me being in bed with Amex LOL, they think I'm cheating

Also, they may think that I bought a new vehicle instead of refinancing the old truck loan I had with Tulsa Federal CU.

I've gone a long time with Discover being my only CC account, and if I had to go back to that I would, but still, closing with no warning seems very coldish

So you bounced your first payment on the new Chase card?

I understand from your point of view that's not what happened -- but to the risk management computers that's the deal.

You might have good luck calling on Monday and explaining what happened. An underwriter could probably override. You are probably going to say you already explained to a rep that promised to note in the account it was a typo, but those notes don't come into play until a human reads them. The automated risk software still flagged you.

Why did they say they closed it on the phone?

The CSR I talked to didn't give me a reason. He said I would have to call a different number to get the reason, cause he doesn't have access to that. May have been due to high util% reporting this month... who knows.

Sorry to hear

Im already paranoid about card usage now my brain is really thinking

I had had the card since Feb 2012. I last used the card on 4/5/12. I also paid the card on 4/5/12 and paid the entire statement balance of around $1400.

For the cashRewards Visa, I was pre-approved for it after sending in all of my financials for the auto refi, so I'm not real worried about it. If this Chase account was closed for real, and not just fraud review, then I'll be more than fine and I'll continue to build my relationships with NFCU and Amex. I would like to have 3 revolvers, so I'll wait a yr or so when the baddies from 2006 and 2007 fall off and then app for an Amex revolver.

I know you paid on 4/5, but still, with computers, who knows? I've not dealt with Chase enough to know if calling would help, but if I were you, I'd definitely want to know why they did it, and if they can take steps to correct it and re-open the acct.

Banks have a bunch of metrics they monitor new accounts with. The first few months are looked at in fine detail. Anything like entering a wrong account number to ACH a payment raises a flag and can trigger a review or close. There are a widening number of strategies fraudsters use and it doesn't take much of a risk estimate to get AA. Best strategy with any new account is to set up autopay and carefully check account numbers you pull from. This doesn't mean they even think you are gonna do fraud. It just means that in their database of millions of cardholders, certain sequences of internal events in combination with CRs similar to yours fraud has later occured some percentage of the time. Perhaps it's only 3% but those 3% can cost them thousands. They do the math and decide the risk is too high.

However, this is pretty much entirely automated. You have good explanations of your situation and in fact should make a good future customer. There's a reasonable chance you could get them to reverse the decision.

You can find out more about this by googling "first party fraud" and "bust out fraud" to see what banks are up against. FICO is one of the leading suppliers of these banking analytics. You can read about some of what they offer at www.fico.com

EtoA:

They probably won't know exactly why the account was closed. These statistical tests do not lend themselves to specific reasons. A manual reviewer with experience should be able to give you some idea but probably not anything too specific.

I'm not a chase fan..when I got into some credit trouble a few years ago, my score tanked. Some of my cards decreased my CL's slightly, but none of them canceled me...except Chase. I had two cards and a bank account with them, and had never been late. They closed my Amazon Visa and downgraded the other line quite a bit. Amex and NFCU so far have also been great, so I'm hoping that I can continue building history with them and using them.

I've established my share savings with NFCU and I've started putting money back there for rainy day fund NFCU also saved me quite a bit of money, I refinanced my truck with them and shaved off 4% in APR.. They offered me 3.5% interest for a 36 month loan. Can't beat that!

Overall what I was hoping to do in 2012 is to get started with some tradelines that will grow with me as my career and business take off.. My income has more than doubled in the last 3 yrs, and I'm getting married in May. What I'm wanting is to establish history so that later on, if I take a promotion and need to travel more often, I'll have sufficient revolving and charge accounts to cover my travel expenses. My fiance and I now have 2 of our 3 vehicles paid off and its a great feeling

I decided to pay off his jeep instead of my truck since he had a crazy high interest rate.
