My SO is an AU on my card. He took it with him on a 3 week business trip to Singapore because of the no foreign transaction fees. Well, his company screwed up the hotel reservation and he ended up having to put a deposit on the card for the entire 3 weeks that maxed it out. I called Capital One to try to get a little breathing room on the card in case there's tax or a fee that would put it over the limit. Nope. They will not accept customer initiated CLIs, even in an emergency situation. So now he's stranded with only a debit card.

I informed the credit analyst that this policy is alienating their customers. This is the kind of thing that makes or breaks customer loyalty, but clearly they don't care. Every other card I have has a higher limit, so while they were good to me in the beginning, I'm done now. As soon as this gets straightened out with his company and it gets paid off, I'm closing it.

(And I bet they pulled all 3 reports, too. Jerks.)

The one saving grace may be that they most likely didn't pull any report, let alone all 3, simply because they don't accept customer initiated CLI requests. I've never noticed a pull from them when I've asked in the past about a CLI (only to get a similar answer as you), only INQ's listed by them were from the application.

I've had my Capital One card since 2008 and I have probably asked for a CLI about four times. Each time denied. The most recent episode was about a month ago. I called and was placed on hold and he came back with a negative response. I've never had a hard pull from them. They don't even soft pull me. I think they just placed me on hold and pretended they were putting something in the computer. The answer is always no with Capital One. Always no.

I don't know why they pretend they are "checking" if they know there is no way under any circumstance they will grant a CLI. They should just say no from the get-go. Not that I would be less annoyed, mind you.

Sorry that happened. It's been known for a while on the boards that Cap One 99% of the time does not accept customer initiated CLIs.

I would not, however, directly correlate that with your husband being "stranded" as this has nothing to do with Cap One. Hopefully, everything works out!

I do like their no forex fees and take them with me as well (among other cards/cash - just in case).
