chip and pin is for debit cards and chip and sign is for credit cards, these 2 technologies are mainly for overseas so its harder to duplicate cards and reduce theft.i think some merchants overseas will not accept any cards unless it has 1 of those 2 technologies

Close TSquad....credit cards with the chip are called Chip and Pin. They are on all credit cards in Europe and most of the world except the USA (though starting to come here) and instead of signing your name, you enter a pin for your purchase. I have a Citi TY Preferred with the chip but unfortunately, you cannot assign a pin to it so it is chip and signature which can still cause aggravation. If you do a search in the forums, you can find various threads on this.

If credit cards with the chip are called chip and pin, what do you call the credit cards with the chip and signature? You seem to contradict yourself here.

Credit cards with the chip (EMV) are simply credit cards with the chip. In Europe the vast majority are paired with a PIN, but in the United States most (JPM Palladium, JPM Select, Citi Dividend World Elite, etc.) are chip and signature.

The former is the method preferred in Europe as it's more secure and let's you use automated kiosks, which is something you can't always do with a "chip & signature" card. If anyone wants to get into the details of EMV tech, there's always Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMV
