Had them since 2009 and no extra CLIs. I've also never requested one, but I've heard many stories about the CSRs saying, "we don't do that." I have asked them to combine cards with no luck.

I just think it's a waste to sit around and "try" to figure out when and what some computer system is going to give you more CL without asking... Pick the cards that you can request a CLI without HP and as other poster said the cards that will require HP (Chase, etc.) Leave alone for a year.

You go to them and take the HP after you get other higher limit cards because you have much better and more established credit, then your old cards should follow or ditch them!

If you're trying, it's not auto.

Generally, use the card and pay in full. It also comes down to companies. Chase doesn't really grow in proportion to use (in my experience) so people tend to be stuck with whatever their approval CL was for a while. I've read threads where people were stuck with low limits for years or burned an inquiry only to get a few hundred dollar increase, LOL! Chase Freedom will likely be freed to the shredder later this year but I'll leave it open to help with utilization.

Citi has been pretty good to me with CLIs on both cards.

It just doesn't seem right that an existing relationship with needs a hard inquiry.

Chase does not really do automatic increases a lot. You can apply for a new Chase card and receive a high limit and reallocate credit lines if you want though. Bank of Garbage is serviced by FIA and they seem to be alright with automatic increases. With any issuer you usually have to wait around six months before your credit limit would increase.

I've had a "BoA" card since 2008/2009 when they acquired MBNA (Or whenever it was).

It's no surprise that ever since then, I've never had an Auto-CLI.

BTW, the best way to get an Auto-CLI is to just not expect it and be happy if it ever happens.

You can discuss "strategy" of getting one all you want, but in the end, even the best strategy could lead to nothing happening. That's why it's an "auto".

I'm really not surprised that a lot of lenders require hard pulls for credit limit increases. It helps banks control their risk exposure and makes sure that the borrower actually needs the extra credit by making him pay for it with an inquiry. After all, the borrower is asking for more credit, which is what inquiries are supposed to represent, that the person was trying to borrow more money. Soft pulls should be reserved for other scenarios.

Drkaje's point wasn't the rewards.

Yes, they are awesome, but if you want that card expecting to get auto-CLIs and expecting to get massive CLI's without a hard pull, then you are in for a disappointment.

I had no idea about any of this when I got my Chase Freedom and had no clue I'd be stuck at 1,400 forever. Yes, the card is awesome. Yes, the link the checking account and eventually the CSP is the best.

It's a good thing that what I care about is the rewards and not the CLI, because then I'd just be frustrated.

Five years from now, my CL could very well still be $1,400.
