The card is plastic, the numbers are on the front, and it prob won't help you get the palladium. Furthermore, I called to inquire about a possible line transfer to the palladium (eventually). I was told that as of a month or so ago the private banking division handles all applications and the requirement of being a private banking member was reinstated. Hopefully someone hears something different. The person I spoke to at the exec. Office said her dept handled the apps for the palladium until recently. She said if someone called wanting to apply she would transfer the, to private banking.

We had our first child a few months ago and the bills from her hospital stay and his ped appts are starting to roll in. Stupid insurance. Anyway, in total itscgoing to be around 2k, not the end of the world, but it's nice to know that if I choose to revolve some of that balance over two or three months I can worry free. That perk alone is worth the 95 annual fee. if you're on the fence about this card, it gets a ringing endorsement from me.

Are you referring to the hidden TL benefit?

Yes :-)

Does carrying a balance on a card when it does report to CRAs cause lasting damage to your credit score? I was under the impression that the only ding would be to your utilization ratio, and that it immediately goes away when you're back to reporting a zero balance.

Your statement is true regarding the short term affect of carrying a balance with regards to FICO. Once the balance goes back to 0 then no harm no foul. The allure of this card is you can carry a balance and not get any ding at all to utility. For me that means vacations- travel ect... With no effect to my utility that I can pay off over time of my choosing. . Typically- I don't carry balances even for travel, but it's a nice option to have. Plus the no foreign exchange fees. Nice! I'm getting this card! Ha!

^ Gotcha. So the advantages of JPM Select over CSP are:

Hidden TL

EMV chip & signature

Primary rental car CDW

No late or over limit fees

25k points bonus after $100k yearly spend

And the disavantages are:

Weaker rewards (2x airfare, hotel, and car rentals vs. 2x on ALL travel and food with CSP)

No 7% annual points dividend

No AF waive first year

No sign-up bonus (currently 40k points with CSP)

Plain plastic credit card

Am I missing anything?

When compared like that, doesn't seem like a great choice... huh?

If the choices for you are the CSP vs the Select for a rewards card only, then the CSP may be a better fit. But beauty is in the eyes of the beholder so to speak and for me, don't need another rewards card. There are definitely better rewards cards out there. I think for most, it's the hidden tradeline. The fact that there are 2X rewards for airfare/hotel/car rentals is just icing on the cake. I'd get the Select even if there were no rewards. Weird huh?
