If you're really set on a Citi card, I might try the Forward. I believe it's one of the easier ones to get besides the regular Citi Platinum (or possibly Dividend Platinum?). My wife gets offers for that all the time (which for Citi doesn't necessarily mean a ton, though). You're obviously smart about paying things off and managing things, so please forgive me if this sounds insulting or obvious....just providing some suggestions : ).

I would look at where you shop the most (duh, I know). Maybe consider a GE Card {like Gap, Lowes, Walmart/Walmart Discover, Amazon Store Card (or try your luck with Amazon Credit Card by Chase), Kohl's...or even maybe Discover More}. Your scores are obviously very good. Bank of America is actually pretty good about thin credit files if your accounts are clean. That was my wife's first card and she had very little history, but clean file, and they started her off at $5,000 CL (this was almost 5 years ago). So, might start with one of the BoA rewards type cards. If you get approved say in the $4,000 - 8,000 range, sit on it for 6 months - 1 year, then should pretty much be able to write your own ticket on a lot of cards after that. Just my $0.02, FWIW.

I'm just curious, because my scores are high, but the file is thin. I was thinking of calling CITI to discuss to see which card I could/should app for.

Do people do this? Advisable? I'd like to get a CITI thank you rewards card or one of their diamond/sapphire/whatever it is cards.

I got denied for a cap one venture plus card the other day, despite having a clean file, albeit a thin one. So, I'm a little gunshy at the moment. I'm looking mainly for miles/perks since I Pif every month, I just didn't know if they did sometHing along the lines of if you append for one card online but didn't get it, they'd automatically slot you down and approve you for another.

hit up citi/chase, and do recons if they deny; no reason for a deny with a high 700's... what was the reason for the veture plus deny?

My situation is probably a bit different but I'll chime in. I applied after six months of credit history on a capital one card for the citi forward back in february and was denied (unsuccessful recon too) for having too thin of a file. I know pretty much ever caard company outsources, but I was pretty put off by how poor the customer service rep for Citi was. She clearly read off a script and her command of english was sub par.

They want at least two tradelines open and with good payment history before granting approvals.

At that point, I'd probably be looking for another card issuer.

See if there is a specific airlines you tend to fly and if there is a card for that specific airline.

I paid in some cases and negotiated all the others. It also hels that I'm a really good writer. And let's not forget the power of the advice of this board. The baddies: I had two charge offs , three medical collections, a paid federal tax lien and owed 200 to directv, all on my credit report. The goodies: a first and second mortgage paid on time and in full with no lates. A car lease, also PIF. AmEx also showed good, but closed. I did PFDs for all of them, and somehow, it worked! The toughest part was all of the red tape necessary to get the lien purged from my CRs. From there, I opened a secured 3000 cl visa with my bank, bofa. A few months later, I app'd for skymiles Platinum Amex (got it) and the venture card (did not). CapOne gave me a litany of reasons why (most of which were not true, but I think it boiled down to a thin file). I stayed on top of it all, and I'm lucky. Won't happen again. Amazing how you can have 1,000,000 in on-time PIF mortgages, but a sh!ta$$ bank like Capone won't even give you a $500 card! Is it any wonder that Capital One spelled out in abbreviated form is CAPONE..!?

Every time he calls to ask for a CLI, they give him BS answers on why it is not able to be increased. We had x1 30 day late payment in 7/2011 otherwise perfect payments, never over the limit and they will not do a GW remove (bastads...can you believe that)....Congrats on your scores, your hard work paid off!

Great example of not just relying on credit score. While score is great, it is really just saying great score for someone who is starting off in credit. Many prime lenders don't want those customers. Luckily for op, card issuers can't tell if he is some person who came to credit later in life as opposed to someone who just had their baddies knocked off. My recommendation is to get a couple more easy to get cards and garden for a little while. Easy cards are store cards. Local credit union likely to give card with no af and rewards (walk into branch before apping). Give those new cards 6 months to 1 year and op will find lots of doors will open. Op did mention something about old Amex. Might be worth looking at zync for backdating and getting back in with Amex. If zync gets backdated, the depth of credit file might be solved right away but not thinness. However thin files are more acceptable to lenders.
