Based on the posts I've seen, the Amex more than $25,000 FR rule is based on several errors. First, the automated system will let you ask for a CLI up to $25K. From that people make the incorrect negative inference that any requests for CLI above $25K will require additional proof of income/assets. Such a request may or may not require additional support. The error is further compounded by conflating this with an Amex FR. If by FR it is meant that they might ask for financial information to review, then sure. But it's something else to say that they'll suspend all accounts, ask for 4506T, etc.

I was just given an auto CLI from $25K to $27K, so I know that you can get a CL above $25K without submitting any add'l documents.

I started off with a $2K limit and had it bumped up to $6K after 60 days. Six months later it increased to $18K. Tomorrow is the next 6 month mark so I'll ask for $25K, the highest you can do on the call-in request.

Keeping fingers crossed!
Edit - just called in. Instant approval to $25K

The 25k rule is a fairly safe "rule of thumb" but nowhere in Amex's small print do they specifically address this matter. I suggest calling in and actually speaking to the CLI dept. You may actually be surprised at what you hear.

I feel like it isn't the amount that gets the FR, but the size of the jump. Going from $2000 to $25,000 in a little over a year might cause a red flag since it is a 1000% jump. Just because it is possible to request 3X (and the fact that it is common knowledge on a board like this) doesn't mean it is common for the average AMEX customer to do this so I always get nervous that the system "notices" these things. OP how are your other limits? Are they close to 10-20K? If not, I'd probably stay with your current limit or go for a nice round 20K.

I'm aware that there is no Amex rule "in print" that if you ask for more then $25,000 you get FR. It's just a rule of thumb that most people stick to in here. Amex is very YMMV with pretty much everything for all kinds of things. They play by their own rules, we just choose to play the game with them. If you want to ask for more knock your self out.

That's what I've thought, that just because the automated system can only go up to 25K, that doesn't mean that anything higher will require an FR. Amex just wants a human to review any customer requested limit higher than 25K. That person could probably approve a request without any additional paperwork or could ask for some income verification, but i doubt they'd automatically go through the FR process.

In response.

I have absolutely no need for a $25K credit limit.

I have NFCU at $18K with no balance and WF at $13.5K with no balance in addition to the Delta Gold AMEX at $18K with no balance.

I am not worried about a FR because I have been totally honest with AMEX. Just going with $25K because AMEX says that is the highest they will go on the auto call-in. Just to do it, no other reason. I have more credit than I will ever need as I do most things with cash and have fairly decent scores. In 8 months all my baddies will fall off and all three of my CR's will be pristine with these three cards all reporting for several years along with a $400K mortgage. I have no need for credit in the immediate future and this is a soft pull, so why not?

Just for grins and giggles. If I get it, great. If not, I don't need it so why worry?
