I was just approved for an Apple card in the amount of $2000. I was planning a rMBP purchase totalling just over $3200. I called and asked for an increase and after asking me about my salary and about an unpaid account I have with HSBC from 2007, he denied me saying that the 2 other cards I have (secured cards from CUs) are only $2000 each so they could not extend an offer above that amount. He also gave the reasoning that they are too new (one is 1 year old and the other about 7 months).

My utilization is currently about 10% if the account I paid off last night is reflecting that already. If not, it may be closer to 30%. But he did not mention my utilization at all. Just the old HSBC account, my current lines being $2k, and how new the current lines were. He did aknowledge I've been doing well with the current lines. I failed to see if he would tell me what my TU score is. I know my Experian score is 609 right now.

Perhaps he didn't like my answer that I was "in the process of determing how best to address the outsanding HSBC account"??

I think I've seen others say keep calling until you get the answer you like. What do you guys think? Should I call back again and hope for a better answer? Perhaps I should point out that I have plenty of cash in the bank to pay in full, I just prefer to use the 0% interest for 12 months. I'm really trying to expand the amount of credit I have so that my utilization stays low.

I'm new to all this, so please forgive any mistakes or bad etiquette on my part.

Yes, but part of my focus is to get a larger screen than I have now for photo editing. I'm finding the 13" screen on my Vaio is just too difficult to edit on when sitting in a coffee shop or similar.

I would do the following

1) Resolve the HSBC account

2) Keep your util low 10% or less

3) Wait at least six months before asking for increase. A possible concern Barcley is having is you have opened three new credit accounts within a year. The possible concern is why is this consumer needing that much credit and now asking for more. Presuming a consumer applies only for the credit they need the why does this consumer need so much new credit could be a concern. The wait will bring the secure cards over a year and you able to extablish a payment history with them.

You are either going to have to wait six months and try for a CLI at that point or finance part of it, using a debit card or another credit card for the the rest. The nice thing about Apple is that you can use multiple sources for payment.

The approval itself with 3 cards in a year is a great thing.

For atleast 6 months now, don't apply any new credit, or you may actually risk a Barclay recall.

They did exactly the same for me...asked for $4300, got $2000.

I told the guy on recon line "I'll just put the whole laptop on debit if you guys prefer it that way; ability to pay is not an issue here." And he said "Good for you, your limit is still $2000."

Considering my highest other limit at the time was $500, I still chalked it up as a win.

As noted above, you can always finance part of the rMBP, or do what I did....buy it cash, and then use the Apple Visa to 0% finance a new iPad.
