Cap1 "Check for Pre-Qualified Card Offers"

On Capitol One's web site is a page for Cap1 "Check for Pre-Qualified Card Offers" where they want your name and address. They say that your are not actually aplying for a card.

Does this cause a hard pull from any or all the credit reporting agencies. What does this page mean and do? I have the form filled out but did not click send.

It is a soft pull to see if they have any offer's for you.

If they do and you apply, it will be 3 hard's on your reports. And maybe a chance they won't approve you.

Thank you very much. Maybe I better check my FICO scores again. Its been a month.

I have a BK over 5 years old but 0 baddies sense. My FICO scores a month ago were not so bad as you can see in my sig. I owe very little.

I want one REAL credit card.

Do you think just dropping this little note on them might might help put a bug in their ear for future offers?

Possibly. Try the soft pull and see what kind of offer's you get.

They are higher than all of mine, and when I fill that prequal form out it comes back with all the cards from Needs Improvement. I'm thinking they might not dig BK or something.

My BK was only 2 or 3 years old when I got my first Cap1 card and I don't think my scores were as good as yours at the time. Maybe they are tightening up? Did you double check all of your reports to make sure there isn't anything else in there? Do you have high utilization?

Hi, beenthere, are you by any chance opted-out? This is something you can fill out online to dry up the junk offers that come in the mail.

If so, none of the pre-app sites will be able to offer you anything. I opted back in, and I guess after about 3 weeks, I could get CC offers online.

I took a look at the pre-approval section on their website.

I'm not so sure it's a true pre-approval, as you only give them your name & address and tell them if you have: excellent credit; above average; needs some improvement; or limited credit history.

They don't ask for your ssn, so they really can't pull even a soft inquiry on you.

Now this is only my personal opinion, so if I'm wrong don't start getting mad at me! lol

I think it's just a sort and a listing of their cc's offered, based on which credit category you check.

This is unlike BoA's pre-approval webstite where they DO ask you for your ssn so they can do a soft pull on you. I believe AMEX's pre-approval website works that way too.

Those are my thoughts and I'm unanimous in that decision.

There's been some debate about this, but I'm convinced it is a true preapproval.

SS# is not required to pull a credit report.

I have experimented with the Cap1 preapprovals page to see if it is a true preapproval. I have tried it checking every one of the credit categories, and I always get the same offers regardless of which one I check. I have no idea why they ask you to classify your own credit rating, but it doesn't seem to factor into their offers.

I also saw a soft pull on EX from them when I tried it. I don't know if it's just a coincidence, and they were doing an account review on me on the same day I tried my experiment, though. But I think it's good reason to believe it is a real preapproval.

I owe $34 on credit cards. Haven't gone over %15 utl sense I started getting credit cards again. My BK was mostly credit cards though. Still, no bads in over 5 years. My credit expenses are very low compared to my income as well. Oh well, I got enough going on to be able to buy a house at a decent rate regardless of economy once that BK drops off the reports. I got a promotion yesterday too.

I think about what things were like 5 years ago and what they are like today and i'm amazed again and again. Thankful is what I am.

I'm not sure what you mean by opted out but I was thinking the other day that about a year ago I sent a letter to one of the credit card companys asking them to stop killing trees in my name. And then a couple months ago I thought how interesting it was that the offers had dropped off so dramatically. Back when I was getting so many I always thought they were full of crap and nobody would give me a credit card but I didn't know about FICO or this formum or that my credit scores had gone into the upper 600's either. I just though that 5 years into a BK I was supposed to be credit poor for another 5 years. I didn't know and the stacks of offers were just ticking me off. I didn't know they weren't junk.

If this is what Opt out means, I don't really remember but it seems like I did send somebody a letter or an email. I sure thought about it a million times.
